Rear power oulet

Here's the deal. I've got a 1991 4dr XJ with a rear trailer hitch and power outlet. I guess the power outlet is for lights on the back on the back of a trailer? I really don't know. Anyway, I'm wondering how hard it would be to turn that power outlet from the trailer outlet, to a home outlet. You know, the kind your computer is plugged itno. It's a pain in the ass to run an extension cord for my shop vac, so I figured I'd just use the one on the XJ. Is this possible? Am I gonna need anything special? I figure I can just cut the outlet off the end of the tow package and solder a home plug from Home Depot on there. What do you think?
 
The trailer light plug has nothing whatsoever in common with a household power receptacle...what you need to do is get a power inverter, something like this, and run power & ground cable to it from your battery.

Or you could get a *REALLY* long extension cord, plug it into your garage and spool it up on the roof.

There are essentially two "types" of power
Alternating Current (AC)
-This is the kind of power your house uses

Direct Current (DC)
-Cars
-Flashlights (acutally anything with batteries)
-etc

As has been mentioned, you can convert your cars DC power to AC with the use of an inverter...

I apollogize in advance if this comes across the wrong way (its late and i had a bad day and im tired) but ... I don't know if you should be driving an XJ, muchless screwing with the electric on one, if you don't know even the most basic differences between 110V AC, and 12V DC!

That's probably a good point. I understand the difference, I just never thought about it. It was a quick question ouf of convienience. And you're right, I shouldn't be driving an XJ. I only bought it because it was in good shape and cost me $250. I'm also tired of putting miles on my 2003 Porsche Boxster S. Quite a difference between the two when the wind hits from the side. And nevermind the 4 doors, AWD, auto tranny, no power, crap speaker locations, lack of a sunroof (and having a roof) and there's something else... oh yeah! An engine in the front of the car!

I don't think you DO/DID understand the difference. A "knowledgeable person" would not have asked such an inane question.
 
Ok, its a day later, and I re-read my post from last night.

This guy is an @ss.

If this guy knows the "obvious" differences between AC and DC current, why the hell would he ask if he could plug in his shop vac to the back of his XJ, by soldering in a "home" outlet...just so he wouldnt have to use an extension cord!?

and you're not impressing anyone here with your 2003 porsche boxter.

go solder on your "home outlet" to your tow package wiring and plug in your shopvac. let us all know how that works out for ya.

I know the difference between AC and DC. I never thought that a car probably isn't running on AC. Cum bucket.

2003 porsche boxter's are cheap if you buy them used compared to some of the other Porsche's. There only about 18k and if you payed more your getting ripped off.

Well, actually I could afford a 2003 Boxter (if for some reason i wanted one). the thing is if i was in the market for some sort of sports car around that price, it certainly wouldnt be a boxter. but that isn't the point right now...

the point is you are an idiot. if you actually knew the difference between Ac and DC, the thought would never cross your mind that your jeep might run on AC. (perhaps you didn't notice the BATTERY under the hood, and the fact that you can't "store" AC power)
but that would assume you even knew how to open the hood (on either your porsche or your jeep)

i got a dollar says HE isnt the one that can afford it, but maybe his dad??? either way, it may cost more and run a little faster, but its useless with an XJ parked on top of it :D
 
even if i COULDN'T afford a 2003 boxter...

I'd rather drive around in my 96 Jeep and know all of the systems of my vehicle (among other things)...

then to be 21 and drive around in some 03 boxter and not know what the F i'm talking about (sounding like an idiot).
 
This is one of the funniest threads I have ever read.. Obviously this kid is a tad bit retarded. It’s really not worth anyone’s time to explain DC Power.
Besides I truthfully laugh when I see Porsche boxters on the road. Next time you want to waste 20 grand buy something with some BALLS. Lame ass boxters...
My 56 yr old mother drives a boxter s and it picks up about as fast as my 86 944 turbo which I paid 3 grand for and is a straight beater...
