has anyone turned the rear gate into a cage. that way on the hot days you could get some nice air flow with out every thing flying out.i guess moving the tail pipe out the side would be step one and finding a way to be able to swap the solid one in fast and easy but over all i think it would be a nice change.

Some dingus on eBay had mod for the hatch for an opening window--kinda looked a little cheesy, I think it was made out out plexiglass and raised way up with bars or something to lock in the up position--at least until you went over a bump or it hit a tree limb.

Take it from someone who used to wheel and XJ with no rear hatch, or doors for that matter, when driving at anything over a crawl on a dirt road, the aerodynamics will bring the dust cloud from behind you and throw it at your back and on the dash for the heck of it. No fun.

I second what he said. Being that the XJ is aerodynamically shaped liked a box it causes the air flow going around the vehicle to swirl in on itself. That being said I have totally been kicking around your idea for a while myself. I mean lets face it, no one offroads and attempts to stay totally clean. Or maybe thats just my take on it.

What is a good way to keep air moving while moving slow in these things? would a moon roof help or just be leaky pain? i got a 94 and ac is long gone. Thinking i made a mistake ripping the carpet and insulation out, heat from the engine/exhaust radiates up from the floor.

So are you asking how to keep it cool inside the cab while your out wheeling? If so I would say wheel when its cold out or go faster! I have the same problem...no A/C and it does kinda suck but its one less thing to go wrong. As far as the aftermarket moon roof, I would stay as far away from one of those as I could. I have never had good luck with aftermarket sun/moon roofs. It seems like after a couple of years they always leak.

Sun/moon roofs suck. I have one from the factory and it is a constant battle to keep it sealed. I did have the idea of one of those 12 volt RV fans in the roof since my jeep is set up for camping.
