Straight from the CHP's mouth.

Basically, there are no limits on how dark the glass can be, but you're not supposed to tint the front door windows at all. Of course, enforcement of this is fairly sporadic - but if the cop feels like being a jerk you will get cited for it. Windshield tints are right out.

One thing you may want to consider is finding front windows from a desert state car with the full factory tint and fitting them to yours - worst-case scenario, you go to court, explain that the vehicle was supplied this way out-of-state, and subsequently brought to California. As long as you can show the factory mark and part number on the glass (and they haven't been modified past stock), the worst you're likely to receive is an order to change them out for CA-legal ones, and we've got a lot of XJs in the junkyards around here.

having driven a tow truck and working with the police here in so cali you may black out all but the front doors and front window as long as you have both side mirros. As far as the front doors go a light tint is fine they wont site you for it they will mostly give virbal warnings it mostly just gives them a reasion to pull you over and check you out to keep things ok like no driving and drinking or stolen vehicles etc. they prefer no tint but dont inforce unless its real dark i used to have tinted windows on my car when i had it and never got harrased or told to remove it when they pulled me over for other reasion. just be cool with them and explain that your from out of state and if its to dark ask them what they recommend and they will be cool with you.
oh ya welcome to so cali.
