Putting 6.5" speakers in the door of an XJ ???

I know they call for 5.25" speakers in the doors of an XJ, but has anyone tried to stuff a 6.5" in there ? I was told it might work and the benifits would be awsome if it did but I would like to know before buying a set of speakers.

Very easy. Drill four new mounting holes per speaker and you're done.

The only thing you have to worry about is the depth of the speakers. I have 6.5s in mine..no problem.

All you had to do was drill the mounting holes ? If so I can go return these kicker 5.25" or some 6.5" speakers. Any rattling or clearance issues with the door panels ?

That's all I did. No panel problems. But like DaJudge said, you have to watch the mounting depth on 97+ models, because they have full length windows, and the glass willl hit the speakers if they are too tall.

No problems on the pre-96 models because the glass doesn't extend as far forward.

Well, thanks guys. I returned my 5 1/4 kicker speakers and bought a set of 6.5" eclipse SE8365 speakers. Thanks!!!

I put a set of Polk 6.5" speakers in my 2000 Cherokee. The tweeter dome on these speakers protrudes a bit from the mounting face so the dome tweeter grill touches the door panel but the panels still pops back securely and I don't get any vibration.

i put 6.5 speakers in the front and rear doors

Did the rear door speakers help ? I have the a sound bar in my cherokee and in there I have a set of 6.5" kickers. Did you door panels come with the cheesy recatangular grill ? I was debating ripping it off the door panel and putting the eclipse cover on the speakers but wasn't sure how it would look.

i never had the sound bar in my jeep. the speakers were in the tailgate and didnt do much there. you can hear them a lot in the rear doors. yeah i had the rectangular cover that your talking about. on the back side of the pannel there are 4 torx screws and the cover comes off.

Here's what I am talking about. It looks as if the rectangular cover is larger than the 6.5" cover and wouldn't look good at ALL if removed.

Pick up a sheet of something that looks good, like aluminum diamond plate, and use it to cover your door panel with the new speaker mounted over it. Like either a ring to go around the grill or maybe a triangle to cover the whole bottom corner of the door panel. Be creative, maybe cover the whole bottom section of the door, cut some flames into it, cut out behind it and mount it over a sheet of plexiglass or lexan and add LED's into your door panel, whatever....

There are different size 6.5" When I went throught the job of putting new fronts in my 98', I bought 5.25 and they were to small, took them back got some 6.5" and they were to big. After some tlk with the local best buy instaler he told me to look at the different brands and there specs, I ended up with infinity 6.5 in the door, no mods.

there arent wires ran to the rear doors on 98+ are there. btw to hijack, is it easy to fit 6.5 in the sound bar or is 5.25 the max??

6.5's will just fit the recessed area so they fit flush, but will likely require some material removed from the inside of the ring to fit the spider. However, the lack of airspace in the soundbar means that you will not likely gain any extra bass from a 6.5 vs. 5.25

Lack of airspace? Soundbars in XJ's aren't sealed, so how is there a "lack" of airspace? You could actually say it's the opposite...

I stand corrected. Doesn't change the lack of bass response :D

Mind you I bought 6.5's for mine, and it only took a minute with a dremel to get the fit, but even at that, it might be unnecessary bother.

I don't know enough (okay anything, really) about audio to speculate as to whether it might be harmful to sound reproduction to use a larger driver than necessary. I.E. is a 6.5 simply overkill, or does it actually hurt the sound?

Would you recommend 6.5 over 5.25 for the soundbar?

Would also be interested to see a picture of the backside of a 97+ soundbar/headliner if anyone has pics.
