I cut and folded my rear quarters so i could avoid chewing my rear tires up any more then i had to, and also started making a simple tube rear bumper so i had at least a rear recovery point while out in moab

Re: where have all the good cherokees fs gone

So getting back to the build thread: As some of you already know, during the 20+ days my cherokee was missing after being stolen i bought myself a yj to build for actual wheeling and then surprisingly my xj was recovered. It showed up with only a few minor things missing and the only big thing was the wheels and tires

I was unsure what to do with the cherokee when it first turned up as i thought i would never see it again. The first thing i did was borrow a pair of rollers to move it around on and replace the hannemann fiberglass fenders with the stock ones. I never really cared for how they fit and never really wanted to mess with all the necessary modifications that would have came with mounting the rear flares.

After stewing over it for a few weeks and driving the new yj to work every day, I've decided to keep the xj! Theres just no good way to make my family and any kind of camping gear fit into the yj, so the plan is to build the yj fairly hardcore (one tons and 40s) and keep the xj for a daily driver/light camping wheeler. I made a deal with a good friend of mine on all the hannemann fiberglass parts along with the hp44 and 9". A d30/8.25 combo will do me just fine driving to and from work.

After getting the insurance check and the money for the axles and fiberglass i have a nice chunk of change to put into both jeeps. I grabbed a set of 5 wheels and tires off of a 2013 rubicon tonight from craigslist for the xj. The wheels have practically brand new 285/70/17 cooper discoverer A/T3 tires on them. I should have the axles swapped out and the wheels mounted sometime in the next few weeks so ill be sure and snap a few pics when i do.

Re: where have all the good cherokees fs gone

Been staying late all week working on getting my cherokee driveable again. I built myself a new springpack using a stock xj and comanche pack cut up and put together. Then i found an 8.8 with limited slip in our axle inventory at work so i pulled it and started cleaning it up.

I sanded about 1/2" off the bottom of the diff so it is flush with the cover now, i roughly set the pinion angle and sanded it level with the ground. Then i welded up the remaining divets in the bottom of the diff and smoothed everything out

I started cleaning up the top of the diff by cutting off the casting ears and welding up the holes where the abs censor went, still have more welding/sanding and smoothing to do on the top

Its all torn down, next ill jig it up and check to make sure the tubes are straight, wait for the lsd rebuild kit to show up and then install the 4.56s.

Everyone thinks their axle is straight till you put the alignment bar through it.

Both of my tubes were tweaked slightly, so i spent part of the afternoon straightening the axle. Getting the tubes as straight as possible will make all the bearings and seals last longer and not leak as well as make the tires not have any funky camber/toe issues.

Shoot, one big wack with a big hammer at 1:00, and it's all good. :) That's cool, I've never seen that before.

Re: where have all the good cherokees fs gone

Probably end up being a rare correctly set up 8.8 in a Cherokee for the Denver area :gee:
