Now were talking firpower! I'm used to calling a 50 foot clearing wide open space but out here in Colorado I could see the desire for a large gun. What would be a good compromise for a heavy hunting /protection weapon? I need that.
As far as the spray and pray goes it's just the most fun. Spead out a half dozen 5 galon buckets and see how well you hit them during a run duck and cover type move. Most experts will tell you to aim you weapon carfully even at very close range. Spray and pray does not work in the real world but it's a blast if your just playing around. It's great if your shooting around mud and water.
Ask 5-90 about muscle memory, it's actually easier to train yourself to miss than it is to hit. If I throw up the old revolver and punch the 10 ring with the first shot, I'm likely to pack up my junk and call it a day. Or go fire something else. If I'm having a bad day, I'll move the target in close and shoot one handed exercise for awhile. As soon as my groups get small enough I'll move the target back out and switch to two hands. I'm careful about letting bad habits creep in.
Quick fire training is often Skeet, then bird shooting. I've had some really good practice (and fun) kicking bushes in the heat of the day and shooting Jack Rabbits. If you can hit a Jack changing directions every few feet and sometimes running right back between your legs on occasion, you can hit most anything.
My mother could do it with a single shot, 22 rifle, I never got that good.
The strip of meat down the backbone of a Jack is actually good eating. The dogs go nuts over the rest of the Jack.
A Winchester model 70 in .308, 30-06 0r 7MM Mag, will out shoot most shooters. What I'm saying is the rifle is more accurate than 95% of the rifle shooters. Scopes, triggers and whatnot are plentiful and easy to find.
Remington Woodsmaster is a good autoloader (comes in most calibers), the older models came with a removable magazine. Add ons and parts are easy to find and plentiful.
The only real difference between a Woodsmaster and an assault rifle is ????. The Woodsmaster is well made, accurate, predrilled for a scope. Extended magazines are available for the older models. I don't know for a fact, but have heard the newer models have a fixed magazine.
I have an old Woodsmaster in 35 Remington (17 shot magazine), fires 200 grain soft points. You hit a pig with one under 200 yards and the pig changes directions. The bullet expands well beyond 50. Cal.
