Proper arsenal

Personally I have always tended towards my defensive fire starting at 1000 yards. Whatever I have I want it to be accurate and effective 400 yards further than my opponents. Thats why I lean towards .30 cal, .308, 30-06 and 300 winmags with the oddball .270 thrown in. But for serious max range nothing beats a .50 cal in either barett or M2 though I would like to get my hands on an M248, that baby is sweet and much more manageable than the M60 ever was not to mention that box mag gives you the third leg for support vs that damn flip out lever on the 60 that would eat your shoulder raw.

I cringe whenever anybody starts talking about spray and pray type shooting. It always brings to mind a couple of friends, who wanted to learn to shoot, but were unwilling to listen. They thought if they fired enough ammo, the accuracy would happen by itself.
One of them eventually fired 21 rounds inside a crowded bar, actually managed to hit three of his attackers and miss the bar maid and any innocent bystanders. Though he did punch a lot of holes into the cars in the parking lot, after most of his rounds went through the walls. Funny the guy had a (no chit) IQ of about 150, but always was a little short on common sense.
I train and teach just the opposite. Accuracy first and foremost, then speed. A second round hit most always takes longer than a first round hit. If your accuracy is good and you make a mistake (in basic technique), it's usually still a hit.
These are stats from Maryland Police, but likely indicative of most shootings.

It really doesn't matter what your shooting, but if your not aiming, the likelihood of a hit goes way down with distance.

Now were talking firpower! I'm used to calling a 50 foot clearing wide open space but out here in Colorado I could see the desire for a large gun. What would be a good compromise for a heavy hunting /protection weapon? I need that.

As far as the spray and pray goes it's just the most fun. Spead out a half dozen 5 galon buckets and see how well you hit them during a run duck and cover type move. Most experts will tell you to aim you weapon carfully even at very close range. Spray and pray does not work in the real world but it's a blast if your just playing around. It's great if your shooting around mud and water.

Ask 5-90 about muscle memory, it's actually easier to train yourself to miss than it is to hit. If I throw up the old revolver and punch the 10 ring with the first shot, I'm likely to pack up my junk and call it a day. Or go fire something else. If I'm having a bad day, I'll move the target in close and shoot one handed exercise for awhile. As soon as my groups get small enough I'll move the target back out and switch to two hands. I'm careful about letting bad habits creep in.
Quick fire training is often Skeet, then bird shooting. I've had some really good practice (and fun) kicking bushes in the heat of the day and shooting Jack Rabbits. If you can hit a Jack changing directions every few feet and sometimes running right back between your legs on occasion, you can hit most anything.
My mother could do it with a single shot, 22 rifle, I never got that good.
The strip of meat down the backbone of a Jack is actually good eating. The dogs go nuts over the rest of the Jack.
A Winchester model 70 in .308, 30-06 0r 7MM Mag, will out shoot most shooters. What I'm saying is the rifle is more accurate than 95% of the rifle shooters. Scopes, triggers and whatnot are plentiful and easy to find.
Remington Woodsmaster is a good autoloader (comes in most calibers), the older models came with a removable magazine. Add ons and parts are easy to find and plentiful.
The only real difference between a Woodsmaster and an assault rifle is ????. The Woodsmaster is well made, accurate, predrilled for a scope. Extended magazines are available for the older models. I don't know for a fact, but have heard the newer models have a fixed magazine.
I have an old Woodsmaster in 35 Remington (17 shot magazine), fires 200 grain soft points. You hit a pig with one under 200 yards and the pig changes directions. The bullet expands well beyond 50. Cal.

I'm packing away my guns for safe long term storage and want to only keep or trade for guns that will make up a perfect arsenal. What would you include? I'm thinking a few handguns, assalt rifle, shotgun and hunting rifle. What would you add? I don't have much intrest in them now but want to know that just the right collection is available. The 10/22 will stay on hand. How do you make sure a gun you have has not been stolen and then how do you deal with it if it was?
1. wtf is an assault rifle?
2. what do yo ufeel most comfortable with?
3. aren't guns evil?
4. a proper sized wheel gun for bears (44mag min, .500 or .460 being pretty nice ;) )
5. a .45 for cutting your way to
6. whatever is the biggest baddest most reliable rifle you can own and still be legal
7. how do I make sure it's not been stolen? I know where all fo them are and I keep them locked when I'm not around
8. if it ends up being stolen file a report!

done.

We had a lot of neighbors in AK that were scared Russia was going to land an assault and invade so they bought 30 cal and 50 cal machine guns and burried them in their yards, bought thousands of rounds, hundreds of pounds of powder, brass, and lead..... crazy people... Don;t they know we're going to invade them first. No "Red Dawn" here.

The old saw of how the old communist satellite countries common people used to oil their gardens instead of water them...
We have some kind of religious group up here thats new to the area, they have several hundred acres in the woods and built a church, nobody has seen it, they put up fences and electronics. Pull into their driveway near the gate or even stop on the road and a truck with two guys comes out of nowhere and watches you. It's started drawing the locals attention, these people are just downright unsociable from what we have seen, don't want another waco up here.
