Project: Rusty Nail

Is that the factory AC compressor? My ZJ has different outputs on it, and I'd like to find one I can drill&tap like you did. Glad to hear it's working so well, tried an impact gun yet?

It's a Stock 1997 XJ A/C compressor. With my 8 Gal tank in the back it runs my IR Ti 1/2 impact pretty well I took lug nuts, and drive shaft nuts with my snap on air rachet too. It drained fast but also fills surprisingly quick as well. btw you get rid of the XJ?

Another quick question about the hydro assist. I think I have the same ram as you and I already solved the tie rod problem by cutting and plating the ruff stuff cover.

1. Does your tie rod hit the driver's side coil bucket? I trimmed mine, but now the tie rod is actually hitting the spring, limiting turning to the left. Can't trim it any more without moving the spring itself.

Are you using OEM brackets? I have ballistic buckets, which lets my clock my coil spring slightly left, right and front, back. So the coil is set slightly rearward. I did however trim the bucket about .150"

2. Did you have to limit the throw of the ram at all or does it match the movement of your steering arms?

I didn't limit it at all, however I don't sit on the steering stops with alot of pressure either, it could of used it but I wasn't that concerned. hope I helped.

Thanks man. Yeah I have stock coil buckets. I was really thinking about getting the ballistic parts to move the coil back over the axle tube, but now that Ballistic is all but defunct, I'll have to find some other company to go with.

Good to know, I'll have to grab one next time I go to the JY. I didn't get rid of the seXJ, but I'm parting it out. It sucks to drive to/from the trail, runs like shit, leaks everywhere, etc etc. So I picked up a 5spd ZJ for cheap that needed a rear end, but runs well and is super clean. I'm going to build that, but do it right and not hackjob it this time. You aren't interested in the S10 leaves I was running are you?

Spent most the day today packing and prepping my truck and trailer for PA, however I did mess with the XJ a little bit. First thing was I NEEDED to finally get my temp gauge going. Now since I have a 2000 head I did not have the port for the gauge in the back of it. So I did this...

It's really the only option I had. It works great but now it seems to show me running very hot all the time. Due to the location does anyone think maybe it's just the nature of the beast now?

My gauge sender rides in a T fitting where the coolant temp sender goes, so both are in that factory threaded port. Since it's in a T, it's at the end of a line, and not right in the warmup loop like yours is, but, mine shows 150ish, until it seems to get enough flow to refresh the coolant at the end of that "hallway" then jumps to 210ish.
If it was in the back of the motor where the 96 head should have it, it would be riding in the coolant/steam mix, not just the boilover, and showing a more true temperature. You (and me kinda) are only catching the temperature of the coolant that boils over, for the warmup loop. It's not ideal, but it'll still let you know if you're getting into a heatsoak situation.
I want to get rid of the T though, move mine to where yours is. Do you remember what size tap you used?

I want to say the old style back-of-the-head sender is a 1/8" NPT but I am not sure.

Also took care of the rot right here as well and cut the rear support. I'll cut the bumper to match the same 45*

Looks like there is some kind of putty around the joint there ... what did you use?

On the underside, what did you coat it with? Was it Primer->Paint->Undercoating? Or just Primer->Paint? Or just Primer->Undercoating? Or something else?

What kind of primer and paint did you use?

Interested in *everybody's* opinion on this.

Thanks.

Ken you're right it is indeed.

I used permatex seam sealer, might not of been needed but I used it on every exterior weld I put down on the truck. I used bedliner, about 1.5 gallons on the underside, and about 2 gallons inside (including all pillars and roof)

When I did my cut n fold I laid fiberglass over all of the metal (also smoothing the outer lip in the process) and sealed it to the inner fenderwell, then used undercoat. No cuts are exposed this way and I think it is as strong as one piece of metal.

Been doing more work on the XJ lately, also been tossing the idea of a cheromanchee lately... but that will be next year at best.

Also found a little present while doing a normal once over after an outting with the XJ

What I've done so far to remedy the issue.

Also got started on my quarter armor. before it's to late!

Noticed this had been untouched for awhile, not much more has been done. Holding off on the rear quarter guards to devise some sort of small rear flare.

Some things have came out however...
I replaced the soft joints on my TNT radius arms with Ballistic Fab joints... and they clunk ALOT. So I tighted them up with Ballistic's 35 dollar wrench that took a month to get here and they still clunk. awesome.

The powersteering pump crapped out on me. I know I'm probably asking to much from a stock xj pump and reservoir with hydro assist but it's what I had. I'm running a WJ pump and WJ reservoir which seemed to really help out, it doesn't whine at all anymore.
