Project: Rusty Nail

thanks for the kind words! I honestly had no idea this would ever turn into a build like this but oh well it is what it is now. Good luck with yours it's all doable you just need to put in the time.

Updates:

Engine- got more brackets installed and other dodads on.

Jeep- did a shake down run on some local trails! Went really well. definitely don't like short arms however.

Great build its really looking good.

Yes... great! :worship:

Why do you feel that way about them... with CAD brackets they are fine! Ride :puke: without them though!

For the lighter welding I use my Snap On muscle mig, then for heavier I use a miller 220.

Small update I know it isn't much but the engine is done!

It does look funny, but it should clean itself up as soon as that engine runs. My water pump and PS pump pulleys were way worse than that after an engine swap in the middle of a thunderstorm, and cleared up after a few minutes of operation.

EDIT: I think you have your belt routing wrong, you are missing an idler (below the AC comp / AC delete pulley) and the alternator, the belt is nearly vertical coming off both sides of the alt pulley.

Kastein good eye! I'm missing some bits still, but it's because I'm debating if I should put this in fully loaded and run the chain off of a head stud, or bolt boss on the block (maybe motor mount?) or if I should actually strip the brackets off the distributor side and use the hook hole on the bottom like I normally do.

Ched thanks! I REALLY don't want to install it, after that it's just a matter of time before it turns to crap. haha and the only reason why it's rusty is because I FINALLY used self control when i painted something!! I left that part raw so it wont contaminate the belt with paint.

I noticed because I tried putting it on that way after my engine pull a few weeks ago and was like "um wtf I could swear this worked before" then looked at the setup on my mj a few feet away and realized my mistake.

I generally lift by the second head bolt forward, second head bolt back, and an ac compressor bracket bolt using a load leveler.

Ok so I give up and I'm sure it's something extremely stupid I did wrong so please flame away if its a duh moment on my end....

So the engine is all installed but I can't get it to run, checked timing and that seems to be correct (I 180'd it just in case) and I am getting spark as well as fuel for sure, however I noticed an odd thing happening while it's cranking, I put my finger on the valve cover breather and instead of feeling a slight amount of vaccum it's actually blowing out. Is this normal? I have been working on this all day so my judgement might be foggy...

Other odd things are that my fuel pressure doesn't hold (probably due to a leaky injector that was nice enough not be a team player) and also I attempted a compression test but either my gauge is broken or compression wont hold either, I can watch the needle spike but it wont stay.

Paging Kastien?

Sounds like cam/valves/timing chain to me. Try dumping a couple spoonfuls of oil into each hole right before testing. If it comes up, you need to hone/bore the cylinders and/or replace pistons, else leakage is through the head gasket or valves. Work downstream from there.

I'd bet your timing chain is set wrongly from the valve cover pressurization.

That's what I was thinking as well, when I set it up I set it so the timing marks with both lined up with eachother, that's what it said in my FSM for my 95, however I looked further into it and it was saying something to the sort of if my cam gear mark was at 3 O' clock and the crank gear is at 5 O' clock I should be able to count 15 pins in between.

Or is this just to verify it's set up properly?

i think that is just to verify that it is set up correctly

When you say the breather, I'm assuming you mean the PCV Valve? If so, positive pressure is what you want to feel. The PCV is supposed to vent blow by buildup out of the crankcase and into the intake. If it feels like and excessive amount, then you probably have excessive blow by. That, as well as you saying your compression isn't holding, makes me wonder about your rings/cylinders. Did you take the block to a shop to be bored, or did you hone it? Did you make sure the gaps in the rings weren't lined up? It could also be your cam being out of time and holding a valve open, but that shouldn't get you extra blow by. Hope that helps.

After a fresh night of sleep I started at the basics and found it... I have a HUGE vacuum leak. so after that was fixed she fires right up :D

Well I got it running at least, but these are the codes I pulled. Someone please chime in and correct me if these aren't the right reasons for each code...

Code 12- Battery, or ECU disconnected

Code 33- A/c Relay short?? (really? because I don't have AC, however my hvac controls do not work.)

Code 14- Map sensor voltage over, or under threshold

Code 55- End of codes.

turns out all of my engine problems were due to timing... so with the engine all set I'm moving on, three companies are getting my hard earned pennies... TNT Customs, BFGoodrich, and ARB. Can anyone guess what I'm setting up? muwhahaha

speaking of which here's some pics I forgot to post.

Getting out the old

If you look close there's no block bosses to mount the bracket that holds the coil on.... weird right?

In with the new!

I gotta hand it to Savvypower for getting me a BLING throttle body for my new engine :D

Also couldn't help myself so I cleaned up my transmission

And cleaned up the trans tunnel while I had the chance
