I went with 2x4 mainly for the packaging. I don't think strength will be an issue.
Hard to tell in the pic, but if I had 2x5 in there I would have begun to get awfully close to the driveshaft with it fully drooped out. I also don't have to deal with a stock trans mount so I don't need that kind of width.
I'll be reusing the plate the previous owner of the NP435/D20 made that bolts to the factory adapter, and just weld a piece of 2x2x.25" to the 2x4 then to that plate. I'll also add a gusset to each side to keep any bending from occurring.
