Project "Constructive Deconstruction"

Re: Project "I change my mind more than a girl"

I don't remember seeing before, what gears are you running? Thick ring gear'll do it.
3.55

Nice looking XJ, that picture on the first page in snow is sweet.
keep flipping through the pages... it slowly falls apart. well, not that slowly.

You do know that you can notch the teeth a little to clear the pin, right?
read that... pulling the ring gear probably took less time.

Re: Project "I change my mind more than a girl"

still waiting on my 8.25 rear riddler cover, which was supposed to be dropped shipped from the mfg. its been 2 weeks now. calling northridge to see whats up (the guy who took my order and has been more than helpful)...

going to see what they say, and then make the judgement call if i need to order from somewhere else plus a lubelocker gasket, or if i just need to place a small order for the gasket alone.

got a few things on the "to do list" before the rocks and valleys weekend.

Re: Project "I change my mind more than a girl"

the guy at northridge (brian, he has been more than helpful) has been blowing up riddler to get some sort of info on the riddler cover. no email responses or nothing. riddler originally said they had the covers in stock, well he finally got hold of them. wont ship until friday.

i am a little weary, as sometimes things dont go as planned. but i changed my shipping address to my school one, and riddler is supposed to be throwing in some goodies. as long as it ships by monday, we should be fine. time to order some 5-760s and a lube locker.

3mp camera phone? :dunno:

no its weird...top half of the pic is clear, but the bottom looks like the tv photos where they blur out the persons face...i just thought maybe you were doing something inappropriate that was censored by naxja lol

Re: Project "I change my mind more than a girl"

ive been playing with the idea of welding my rear axle for some time now... the traction would be fun, 3.55 geared 8.25s are plentiful enough, and i think itd outlast the 30 to begin with. but i know id also like to add a lunchbox down the road, and fully lincoln locking the rear would render it useless. i wouldnt even be able to change a shaft if i welded the cross shaft to the carrier.

so, by donation of dylan, i started working on a different solution:

ive seen a lot of talk about fozzy locking, but never have been able to pull up a lot of information on it. the appeal to it to me is that i can still remove it when i get a lunchbox, or if i just plain dont like it. so, a buddy and i broke out the modeling clay and started to visualize what we wanted to do with it. at minimum, we felt it needs at least 2 voids on the spiders gears that are next to each other, welded. this leaves all the differentiation in the side gears. tell me what you guys think...

option A leaves very little room for differentiation. it will be essentially locked:

option B gives about 45* of differentiation:

ultimately, we decided to go with option B, but its not too late to go to option A if someone has a good reason to. but after talking, and many beers, we came to the conclusion that the differentiation action in option B should be no more stressful on the axle, yet more predictable than a lunchbox locker. the stress points should be the same, with the carrier being the weak link. considering that i got these parts for free, and the cost of a new 8.25... im willing to take the gamble for more traction.

Re: Project "I change my mind more than a girl"

My first thought was that the shock from the movement would be a real bad thing. After reading about this I found I am not alone with this theory.

I couldn't find anyone that has done it and said it was a good idea.

I know you're a poor college kid, but figure in the cost of having to recover your jeep after it breaks on the trail, then getting it home, then having to fix it before you can take some hottie out to dinner and a movie.

I justify the money I spend on my jeep by the cost of going wheeling. The cost of a day off, the travel, food etc, the money you spend on one weekend is more than the cost of a lunchbox locker.

I like how you want to have a different type of build, but what I've learned is to use other people's mistakes to save me time and MONEY.

Re: Project "I change my mind more than a girl"

thanks for the input dan, any anyone else feel free to be brutally honest. in reality, itll cost me less to NOT install them, than it will to put them in. as ive got zero invested into the project.
:speepin:

my worry isnt in the gears themselves. i think the stress would be no less than a poorly functioning lunchbox. the difference being the forces applied to the cross shaft. a lunchbox would push in faze with the axle shafts, trying to split the carrier perpendicular to the ring gear. where as this will be contorting it in an odd fashion, as the gears try to walk over each other. the 8.25 isnt a D60 carrier, there isnt a lot of meat on it...

still on the fence.

Re: Project "I change my mind more than a girl"

Why? You have a front locker. 8.25's may be plentiful. Until you break yours and are to broke to buy a new one. I wouldn't do it.

But if you do I say someone changes the thread to to project hillrod! ;)

Re: Project "I change my mind more than a girl"

**** it, if you are breaking out the welder you might as well make it look like my 8.8... Just try not to get slag on the crosspin and ring gear like the guy I bought it from did. lol
He didnt weld the crosspin to the carrier, but I dont know if Id be able to get it out in the event of a break. Another reason to go fullwidth.
I can get you the pinion out of that 8.25 too if you want it.
