Project "Constructive Deconstruction"

Re: Project "Something Awesome"

not that bad actually, its still covered in snow ice. passenger side remain unscathed, as usual. from now on, all pictures are taken from the passenger side. like this one...

Re: Project "Something Awesome"

cut off the drivers side brackets and started grinding. shit takes forever. i decided to stop after my flat disk crapped out, and i was spitting black luggies. going to call it quits for SB, back to school tomorrow to donate some plasma. then down to lansing.

this shit takes forever. when i finish it up, im investing in a nice sheild, and hearing protection. muffs + ear phones = :listenmus. particulate mask would probably be a good idea too.

That's not supposed to happen?

Re: Project "Something Awesome"

did an oil change, now i got a slight tick, im assuming that will go away.
going to open up my 30, im afraid of what i will find.
noticed my drivers side tire is wearing odd, wheel bearing is shot. there is a $110 part i need to install tomorrow. tinken of course.
Ujoint on that side is shot too. great.

just in time to make it last beyond the 44 i plan to put in. lol
im keeping it 8 lug. likely go with a 14 bolt or the "D60-ISU" some guys have talked about so much. what ever i can find really. some say the 14 bolt is a anchor with anything sub 38s. ill shave it, after that, its just a rock crusher.

Re: Project "Something Awesome"

so... i got a wild hair up my arse and tore into the 30 tonight.... when i opened the 30, i found a whole lot of nothing in the bottom of the diff. thats right, nothing.

turns out, its 100% fine. no loose bearing caps, no chipped teeth, nothing. so why the slop? holding onto the ring gear, i cant turn the pinion. they are solidly meshed to each other. but when i let it go, i noticed that the passenger side spider gear stayed in place, while the driver side rotated. if both are solid, this should not happen.... start inspecting out. i know my U joint is trash, i got a new one sitting on the hood (damn parts guy swore up and down that i needed the smaller Ujoint, because i dont have ABS. i knew my year fit into the category where 297 was standard, and thats what was on the box of the other one. yet, i listened... going back tomorrow to give him or her a piece of my mind or penis.). unit bearing is also 1 36mm nut away from being replaced.

- looks like i WILL be wheeling at the blessing.
- looks like i WILL be wheeler other than the blessing this year.
- i imagine this will take care of my clicks when turning, funky tire wear, and clunks when stopping.
- i MIGHT even be able to put my DS back in for highway driving.

banking on ALL of them, except the last one. the splines in my front DS feel pretty worn out. i had planed to run it when the 44 is in until i can get a tom woods shaft and keep the stocker as a spare (assuming it fits).

we will see tomorrow.

even looked at the weather tomorrow, rain. jeep is in the garage. if only i was this motivated about my HW.

Re: Project "Something Awesome"

done...

ran into a couple snags. first, the ears on my shafts seem to be bent in. a little heat, a hammer, and they are fine now. did i compromise their strength this way?

all tore down, new U joint in.

was bolting on the cover to put fluid in, last bolt... SNAP. thats right, snapped a diff cover bolt. decided to just drill it out and tap it. bit snagged it and turned it almost all the way in. first few threads looked good, so i kept stepping up bit sizes. eventually got it out, with the first few threads still looking good. ran the right tap in, had a bolt laying around that was the same as the diff cover... its in like cheddar.

rides amazing. but now i can feel my out of balance tires... lol. one is F'ed from the bad whel bearing causing it to wear funny. some weights have also been lost from wheeling. i need new tires.

It never ends...
i hope pay off the credit card this summer.

im going to be working for fettes mfg in detroit, making parts for ford. im hoping to have a lot of my own parts made; knuckles drilled/tapped, control arms, steering, and track bar direct tapped for heims... maybe CAD up some of my own brackets....

*tentative* plan is to buy most of what i need in november, when most companies have their black friday sales, and have the D44 and what ever rear end i end up with in over Xmas break.

christmas present to myself. F'ya!

Woot! Mines getting love this week

Re: Project "Something Awesome"

anual spring cleaning time.

first off, i had to wash the jeep, which i really havent done in the last year. made it look a lot better actually.

tires are looking tiny. after a few pay checks, its time for some new ones. kind of excited.

but this focus is more on the interior. i like having a nice interior, first step is to strip everything down to the carpet. vacumed, scrubbed and wet vacc'ed. spick and span:
149777_345865698801186_100001332774399_820261_1576837104_n.jpg

then i got a wild hair up my ass and started removing surface rust off of the doors, rockers, wheel wells, and rear quarters. this was a lot easier with the doors off. naked jeep:
560432_345865815467841_100001332774399_820262_1243834899_n.jpg

even though it looks like shit on the outside, i like having a clean interior. i pulled the carpet up a little, and routed my CB antenna wire under the carpet, and put it inside the B pillar plastic pannel. like i said, i started removing the surface rust, which turned into repainting all my black... which means itll need another wash once it all cures good to remove the sanding dust. the painted parts were wiped down and degreased this time, i didnt do that last time. hoping it lasts a little longer this time around. i need to just get new fenders, so i can spray my raptor liner.

vacumed again after the sanding, wiped everything down, and armoralled everything... shes all back together now. no shots of the new black, it was dark when i finished up. still a few things to button up before i head back to detroit tomorrow. but simple stuff.

Re: Project "Something Awesome"

some updates...

all rust removed from doors and rockers. im sure the rockers wont last long (well... maybe they will, with as little as ive been wheeling lately. lol) back in the D working for now.

sold the D44 for what i payed. basically... im not going to be anywhere near a garage this summer. im not going to be near a garage during the next school year, and ill likely keep going to school next summer. long story short, i dont see myself EVER being able to devote the amount of time, and attention to detail i would like to the axle swap. and the more it sits around the more i feel obligated to buy parts for it. so it had to GO!

just ordered shackle relocation brackets though.

need to find replacement bushings for my leafs/shackles and im good to go.

Re: Project "Something Awesome"

finally figured out why my phone wasnt sending pictures to my email...

before:

after:
178923_357441647643591_286685965_n.jpg

after image doesnt have the rear bumper put on. overall, i am happy. only had 2 issues that i will address later. even with my completely shot bushings, i did notice a difference with the 300+ miles i put on the jeep this weekend.

just ordered spacers for my moabs. found a set of STTs, 285/75R16, measures out to about 33x11.50. i think i could clear them without spacers, but dont want to take the chance. should be on next weekend.
