Project 5.0 install begins today

How is it coming?

Well we are guessing the size of exaust from performance without exaust system and then with it on. With wide open 3" exit from the collector, the motor has a signifigant difference. The first system was the DynoMax with 2 1/4 pipes (stock set-up). The newer system is a 2 1/2 pipe set-p and it is only a little better, well better than the stock. Each system has come no where near what it is like when wide open though.

After 400 miles I am pretty constant at 18Mpg around town, I have done no significant stomping on power yet though. Also remember I am super light XJ with 4.56 on 32"s.

First oil change will be tomorrow, along with the diff's getting some new lube.
I have a couple of rockers that will need adjustment, but I wanted to wait for the first 1000 miles to done with before climbing back into the motor.

What I need to do is test it out with EGR and then with the system blocked. The cam is supposed to have a longer duration to allow for the EGR to be removed, as in the newer years with no egr. That could be one of my problems right there.

I have a ton of torque though, the whole back end twists when the Jeep takes off from a start and through the gear changes. I will chirp 2nd and I almost got a bite from 3rd. I was using the electric trans button for that one and had it switched to power to hold higher rpms.

Thank god no leaks..... yet.

Cooling is a priority right now, the thing heats up realy fast and I have only one fan at the moment. It will need to have both electric fans runing all the time for cooling, sitting idle is like sitting on a time bomb. :fuse:

One item of note.... The TCI harmonic dampener I installed, shattered on me while driving, that was fun. Got a new stock one and it is happy.

I am not so sure of my injectors being at 30lbs just yet. I have been unable to confirm thier lbs. Only number I have to go on are what is printed on the side of them and that they are from a suped up 5.0 mustang, so who knows. I have no ping and it does not seem to be lean though.
written on the injector is: 195500-7756 and E6TE-A2B ... Anyone have any ideas?

Any updates?

Update on the motor... Best update is when you have a ton of miles added.

Ok, the MPG on the beast is awesome, even running like crap it is great.
Again... The truck is super light, weight makes a huge difference and I do not stomp the skinny.

I had to upgrade to the Adj Fuel pressure regulator from HESCO. I was running way too lean, which caused heating issues, high NO2 emissions, F'd with my O2 sensor...

I currently have a blown head gasket, which I can point at the lean running for probable cause to failure.

Once I open it up I will post pics of the Cylinders, Piston heads, and he Head itself for how it has handled over time and abuse.

Dissection will occur around 4 May when I get back to the truck which is being stored in Arizona while I have been gone.

I will be adding a new MAP sensor, new exhaust, new radiator, new wiring all over the place, LED lighting, Long arm suspension, new interior, basically making Battle Wagon new again.

Once I get my flight plan finished and set up at the location, I would be happy to invite anyone who wants to see the build, offer advice on where I should go with some of the choices, or just wrench it up. I will be up north Phoenix area, 40th St and Thunderbird area.

I would enjoy coming out there to do a weekend of wrenching and fabbing. My nephew lives near phoenix.

Coming out would be welcome.

I am going to devote about 12 days to refitting the XJ. Per an agreement with the Wife, I have to put AC back in it and doors back on. It made so much more sense to spend on the XJ than buy a new car for us to use.

I am thinking of maybe finding a '99 intake and switch out the old one, but I am still on the fence with it (will the fuel rail be the same?, I know I need new PS pump and bracket, new TB... I have a 63mm TB right now on the old style intake.)
I am ripping out old radiator setup and electric fans/switch system in favor of buying the really pretty kit from Griffin that has an all metal, capped radiator, to remove the closed system... So free electric fans to any who wants them (2 fans)
Pacesetter Headers probably getting removed also and replaced with a borla set from the motor all the way out.

What I really need is someone who knows how to tune in my roller rockers... I did a poor job on them the first go around and this time I want to get them done right. I am praying I did not flatten my cam with too much pressure on the lifter.

Basically anything coming out of the XJ will be free game as I replace with newer gear that I can finally afford with having to re-invent a part to get the job done.
I have the Rough Country Extended lower control arms that will be coming off, so those go free also. I got them free so bad karma if I sell them!

Also a Tom Woods drive shaft brake kit to anyone who wants it.
Disc brake conversion kit also for grabs, it is non-Ebrake though... Big ford front calipers from a '73 along with the rotors and adapter mounts for the 14bolt/d60, with extended brake lines.

I will post a thread of the fender to fender rebuild of Battle Wagon...

Also with the wear data on the engine once we get it open to measure the cylinders and document the inside.
