Problems installing my 30tooth Speedo Gear

Good morning.

I followed the "NP 231 Speedometer Gear Install Writeup" exactly but when I took it for a drive my speedo was not registering. I opened it back up and put the old one back in and it worked fine. I figured I'm just not smart enough so I took it to a mechanic buddy. He installed it and same thing happened. He looked at the size difference between the factory gear and the 30 tooth gear and there is a significant diameter difference between them. The factory gear is much larger than the 30 tooth. He seems to believe that the teeth aren't touching the internal gearing.

I confirmed the part number and it is right. Any ideas?

The late model 96XJ with the 8.25 29 spline rear.
4.5 RC lift
33" tires

The housing that the gear goes in needs to be rotated/clocked to match the new gear to mesh properly.

What part number did you use?

Sounds like you didn't clock the housing... Scroll down to "Changing The Gear" and read the part about lining up the numbers on the housing.

You were right gents... Went back in and "clocked" it slowly this time. Felt it slide in place. Works great now. Thanks!
