Print spooler

I can't get my print spooler running. My system is squeeky clean, in case you're wondering. When I try to manually start the spooler via run>services.msc I get this error:

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

I've tried replacing the spooler.exe with a known working one with no luck. Anybody have any suggestions short of a reinstall?

This is XP pro.

Check to make sure the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is running. If it is not running try to start it. If it fails check the system event log.

If the RPC service is running go to the following folder and delete any files inside, it might be a corrupted print spool: c:\windows\system32\spool\printers

I Got it.

Apparently since I used to have a Lexmark printer, it changed all of my print spooler settings. I had to COMPLETELY uninstall the lexmark drivers (manually) then play with the print spooler settings.

Here's what I did:

1. Go to Start>Run and type in services.msc then press Enter. 2. In the window that opens find "Print Spooler" on the right 3. Right-click "Print Spooler" and select "Properties". 4. Click on the "Recovery" tab and change all 3 drop-down boxes to "Restart The Service". 5. Make sure the 2 text boxes underneath say "1" in them. 6. Click Ok until you are back at the Services window, close it and you're good to go. 7. Go back into the properties of the "Print Spooler" tab and be sure to click Start to restart the Print Spooler service and it will restart the service immediately.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw your thread. Lexmark makes some pretty crappy software that it creates dependencies for the print spooler.
