Pothead Hubs

this is why he didnt want to get any closer to center first pic is the rotor Inside edge

second picture: the back side of the HUB, it has a largers diameter than the outside, he is pretty close to touching the side.

kinda wonder if its even possible anymore, i mean am i crazy to think that you can break the inside diameter of the rotor and it shouldnt matter... because it will have 5 studs holding it on? and the hub well... he could have gotten up next to the hubs outside diamter because all you have to do is grind off the stud a bit (which he had to do anyways)

so his only fear really was that the rotor would get messed up when drilling it or something...

this is why this conversion isnt that common, buuuut for a trail only vehicle i might run them, id have to look at em in person

I don't know, it might be o-k. But you are risking tearing up your beadlock wheels by running them, and they cost more than getting another set of hubs and doing it right. If the lug nut do become loose while 4 wheeling, you could A: mess up a wheel by egg-shaping the holes. B: Have a wheel fall off while climbing the waterfall on trail 3, which causes you to roll 'er over and test out the RSOR Cage, or worse; C: the wheel gets loose, breaks the studs off, and the tire/wheel goes flying off while going down the road killing a young mother and her infant child.

So, maybe thats a bit extreme, but you never really know. I doubt anything that bad would happen, but in all seriousness, you really could ruin the wheels.

at this point im going to get the hubs on the axle so we can set up the gears and get this thing slung under the YJ... i have no worries of the YJ rolling around at RSOR or onto a trailer to get home...

tyler ill have you look at them and tell me what you think when i get down there... (btw i dont know for sure when that is, might be sunday if your available, have to talk to the wife, i think she has plans for saturday)

JMHO but runing a 5 on 4.5 pattern on a D44 hub is a bad idea. I would think the 5 x 4.5 beadlocks would sell for some decent coin and 5 x 5.5 rims are everywhere and cheap. Hell I have seen them for free before. Beadlocks? Isn't that what you are selling Tyler? How much are they? Sonds to me like you put too much $$ in the engine go compartment and tried to short the axle go department. No offense just calling it like I see it.

no we havent shorted anything... im on a tight OVER budget and have no more money...

i already bought and paid for beadlocks 6 months ago... before i even thought about putting in a D44...

either i redrill d44 hubs to my current pattern and run my existing wheels or i redrill the 8.8 axle shafts to 5.5 and buy all new beadlocks.... there is no problem running 5x4.5 on a d44 if its drilled correctly...

i just happen to get a raw deal because i trusted this guy to get it done proper... he has worked for our company in the past and he does good cheap work if you dont care about a time frame... well he just went and decided to change something on me without my approval or even asking me till he had done it... this is the machinists fault... if he was going to change something outside of my parameters he should have waited for me or told me he couldnt do it instead of screwing up my hubs...

like the old saying goes, "there is good, cheap, and fast: you can have any two. you can get something good and cheap but it wont be fast, you can get something cheap and fast but it wont be good, and you can get something good and fast but it wont be cheap."

i was letting the fast go because im not in a position to spend out the ass for it...

Keep a lug wrench in the jeep and check the torque often, run it.

Go fast , take chances. I really wouldn't worry about a wheel coming off and killing a bus full of children, or flying off and having sex with your sister.
You will know if it's coming loose on the road, wobbles shakes, makes noise, before it jumps ship.
On the trail, if a wheel comes off...meh, it has happened to me twice, no big deal for a front to come off, the rear only slightly more exciting.

I don't know about this. Woody had a wheel come off returning from the Crawl one year and it came off rather quickly. Of course it was a rear wheel bearing that was the issue but from what I remember him telling me about it it was sudden. Personally, I'd go back over there and demand he get a new set and do it right. There is always small claims court. :roflmao:

Ha! The "Pothead Machinist" indeed!
Blake already paid him, so asking for him to make it right on his own dime is likely not going to get any results better than what we has now.

id go back anyway and tell him what the issue is, and calmly explain that the design change he made is an issue and you knew how tight the tolerances would be before hand, and mention that this set of hubs is useless now and be diplomatic.... if he's an ass after that the curse his ancestors to the inception of time in front of him...

he doesnt deserve an old refrigerator maybe if it was packed full of meat when it went out and no one knew it went out till a week later when all the meat was rancid and then they just took it to the dump without cleaning it out and then maybe he would deserve that :D

... i just cursed him with the usual "may all your future endeavors fail until you make this one right."

hell thats pretty tame i used the standard "i hope your struck blind deaf and dumb in a hilarious yet horrific accident involving a possibly a go cart or golf cart and if it doesnt then the louisville slugger in the back seat will do if i cross paths with you again.."

yeh he may get mamed in your curse but in mine he lives a depressing life always wondering why he cant sell anything or make any money doing anything... ever... and then dies a fruitless life. mine is more poetic and justice based... :D
