Many of you probably read my thread on the guy who charged me $600 for a new oem fuel pump for '98, and after I dropped the tank (and skid plat and hitch), found the old pump still there. Basically he just threw some gas in there because the sender went bad and I ran out of gas. Told me I burnt out the pump, blah, blah, blah,... AMEX refunded all my money, and NYSDMV probably would have too, 'cept towing.

Anyways, I've discovered this criminal works on many other teachers' cars in the district I work in (11 building 375 teachers), because he lives in the district and his kids go there (I taught one of them). I'm in a dilemma: Let him continue to possibly $#@% my fellow co-workers, or keep my mouth shut.

What would you do?!?

Thanks, Mike #300

Again, The thread will probably get moved, but I need a fair number of people to respond. Thanks again.

I would tell people about it , why let others get riped off by some sleaze ...... I have NO Respect for a Thief and if You let it go on You Show Him Respect Like He made a simple mistake or Something...

Just be careful that you express your opinions only and facts that you can back up. Otherwise you might end up in court with a defamation or libel suit against you.

Don't denigrate, slander or othewise embellish what happened. Just tell people what he did, what amex did and stop at that, no futher, no recommendations, no 'you should not go there', saying 'I would never go there again' is OK, telling someone else not to is a bad idea, telling them your story is not...
I has similar happen to me with my trooper, took it across the street from where I worked one winter when it really needed an oil change, we had had almost 3 weeks of continuous snow and sleet. I Specified Mobi-1, paid close to $70 for it and when I picked it up that nite knew there was no mobil-1 in that engine by the way it turned over like it had a low battery. Went back in and asked for the empty containers and he could not produce them. A cop had stopped in and was standing there listening to all this, went back out to get my receipt and when I came back he handed me a refund. This guy was stupid, he had a built in customer supply with our company including car rentals and all he had to do was provide fair return for cost, if he had said 'I could not get out to get it so put normal oil in' or something it would have been ok but he tried to deceive me, STEAL FROM ME cause thats what it was. Being the head systems guy I made sure EVERYONE knew what happened as soon as they logged on to the network for the next 3 days. I love MOTD's....
Moral: NEVER piss off the network guys..... cause you never know how or when they are going to get you... :laugh3: Needless to say the station about 1 mile down the road got alot more business and opened an Enterprise rental too.... Thats when I found out the CEO, CFO and President actually read those MOTD's I put up on login..:wow:

I's may do it anonymously, like a memo to each building, Gossip tavels fast. The guy even pointed out an '02 Lexus on the lot belonging to the wife of a h.s. phys ed teacher while trying to sell me the fuel pump job.

He's registered as a NYS repair shop, for some reason he can't/won't do NYS inspections.

Any suggestions on how to do this? This isn't revenge - I got that when he had to eat the towing charge via AMEX:laugh3: .It's truly about helping out my co-workers (can't spell collaeges) :lecture: And he's not listed on the local BBB website.

Thanks, Mike #300

I find it ironic that you are a teacher and cannot spell colleague.

If people ask about a place, give your two cents worth, bu I wouldnt actively campaign against the guy....yet.

I second that you probably need to be careful about how you do it. I'm not absolutely sure about libel laws in the US, but in Canada, libel and slander are the only areas of law where the defendant is immediately considered guilty and must himself prove that no damage was caused to the plaintiff. The sticky point is, even if is the truth, if the defendant cannot prove that there were no ill effects from reporting on or writing about an incident, the plaintiff will win. A recent example in our courts: a guy picked up a 14 year old prostitute, and successfully fought the pedophilia charges (honest officer, she looked 18...). He then successfully sued the police for defamation when they referred to him as a pedophile in the media, because at his work they started calling him "pedo-phil" (his name was Phil). Another one: a newspaper reported that a government official had taken bribes, which he had, and was arrested for. Later, he successfully sued the paper for hundreds of thousands for "lost income" that he would have been able to get in future business deals if those investors had not known that he had taken bribes in the past.
I would be careful, even though the guy really did this to you, if he loses business because of something you said to someone, legally (at least in Canada - i'm pretty sure its the same in the US) he can sue you, and if you can't prove that your words did not have an effect, you can be held financially liable.

wanna take a trip and we can vouch for each others ingnorance

Just the facts - say YOU won't go there anymore, and explain why if you are asked. Don't embellish, don't "add" anything - just what happened, and what can be backed up with witnesses/paperwork.

With society being as litigious as it is, and the libel laws being so openly interpreted lately, there's no sense in opening yourself to trouble. It's not worth getting $600 back when it ends up costing you $60,000.

Word of mouth is powerful advertising.

It is incidents like this that explain why there are three mechanics in the country that I trust - and I'm the only one in California...

This is the third thread about you getting taken.
When will it end?
You got ripped off.
It happens, to all of us from time to time.
Please take this fawking sob-story to OT, and confront your moral dilemmas with those paid to give advice.
No offense, but I am done with this.
There are shady mechanics everywhere.
Your's isn't the first, and won't be the last.
Take a number.

The pump is fine, love to toss something though, the sender's bad. Rich P. warned that they don't take too kindly to overheating, but I'm still driving with it (w/o skid plate or hitch) in cold weather, and Christmas $ right now is just that. I'll have to wait for my tax refund, I'm trying to buy a house now and am cutting corners everywhere.

I might contact the phys. ed teacher. and strike up a conversation about his experiences with the guy. He's in the h.s. and talk flows downhill from there. He's only an aquaintance but I'll just strike up a coversation about the guy's operation - in a private non email conversation, maybe he'll be curious why I'm calling, 'specially if I mention the guy showed me his wifes' car.

I'll keep the conversation light as Beez suggests, just the facts, and maybe he can impart some info, good or bad, about the operation. I've put my foot in my mouth many times before, I've learned my lesson.

I keep a copy of the photo of the fuel pump next to my desk, maybe I oughta take it down.

Thanks again,

Mike #300

Are you sure he didn't put a Napa $100 rebuild kit pump in there? It uses your original pump housing but replaces the actual pump motor and sock filters....I did one last month in my '98 and it died 2 weeks later.

I thought the same thing. What subject do you teach, Mike #300?

I'm just posting here because it makes kejtar cry.

that's all i have on that.

Shouldn't your reply be in the MWC forumumumum???

I hate it when people (or Beezils) post replies in the wrong forumumumum.

erikrs301,

There was a slew of violations just on his billing statement, I think he wants to keep a low profile, whatever he did or didn't do. I'd prolly do the same not to stir up any more muck, drawing more unneeded attention.

Above is a photo of what he did after I dropped the tank, after about only a week of driving.
