Possible career change that could take me to Denver

So I'm an automotive mechanic working on Subaru's. I applied for a job working for Union Pacific in Denver. Got the email saying I am in the running for the job, just need to get over some hurdles to be hired. I don't know the exact time frame for how fast this will all happen but I am just looking for some in-site from some folks from the area.

I'm a single guy with no wife/kids/pets. So if this were to happen it should be a simple, fairly easy move. My question where (towns) in the Denver area is ideal to find a rental (I'd prefer a townhouse with a garage)? I'd like to start my search now in preparation if this whole deal materializes. Any good websites to help in the search?

Also for a period of time I would probably need a storage space to keep some things as I'm sure most rentals (apartments,townhouses,condos) do not have much garage space to keep large items.

From the info I've been able to gather the rail yard is located right about at the intersection of I-25 and I-70. So anywhere in the surrounding cities that has easy access to either of those Hwys. The distance wouldn't matter too much to me, I would probably be comfortable with about a 25 mile drive one way. Or just about anywhere within the 470 ring road.
 
Westminster, Thornton, and Northglenn are all good if you're wanting to stay in Denver. If you prefer a smaller town that's still close by then come on up to Firestone/Frederick.

You've also got Erie and Lafayette, but I would avoid Lafayette.
 
I know that yard. Closest municipalities are Denver (duh), Arvada, Wheat Ridge, and Lakewood. You can find inexpensive housing just about anywhere, just have to find the right spot.
 
Thornton has a good assortment of bars to pick up the ladies, and they're finally adding that light rail to down town I voted for when I was young/single and always going down town.
 
Avoid anything that requires you to use any of the surrounding highways (70.76.25) for the commute unless you do so at random times. That area is totally effed during traffic times. Denver has some of the worst pointless traffic I've ever seen.
 
I looked into the UP when Intel was shutting down. They had a 24 hour a day on call requirement with a, if memory serves, 2 hour report window. Leastways the job I looked at did...

Had I not retired, the UP would have been a good place to be. A solid, growing, company with a long history. Once in, you are pretty much set. Very strong Labour Union.

IMO, the best shop to be attached to would be the yard in Cheyenne. Then you could volunteer to work on the Steam Engines. Last of their kind still on the road...
 
As for monthly expense for a place, I don't really know yet. I have an idea on how much I would make per month, but not 100% positive. Once I get a little further in the hiring process I should know more.
Two other co-worker mechanics at our place left in the last few months to work as Diesel mechanics at rail companies locally here. I figured I would give it a shot cause they said it was the best decision they have made.
Pay is good, benefits can't be beat and the company is a solid choice. Rail is a very solid career to get into.
 
Yeah, a lack if benefits is what's keeping me from making a career change. It's hard to beat the benefits at my current job, and while it would be nice to be able to work overtime I don't want to have to work it all the time. That's what rules oil field out for me unfortunately.

I'm thinking of looking into UP as well. Keep us posted as you progress through the process please.

I wasn't looking at an oil company in the Springs. It was a small performance shop specializing in DSM, GTR's, and moving to include high end European cars. Great opportunity but the lack of benefits has me concerned and hesitant.

Thanks. There are a couple of us contemplating it, and mention of a shop in Cheyenne has me further intrigued. Not too far of a drive until I could move, and land is cheaper up north.

And you don't have to pay the state for permission to take possession of a firearm.

Just curious, what do you do for work? I don't frequent this chapter often so I'm not too familiar with the goings on of who is who.
