I'm looking to up the horses on my 99 XJ. I already have cai and 2.5 exhaust straight into a 40 series dumped. Is there anything I can do to get some more hp without spending crazy $. Just trying to see what I should do nxt for the most bang for my buck. Open to ideas and tips

'00+ intake manifold
Insulate underside of intake manifold with Thermotec heat barrier
62mm bored throttle body
Clutch fan delete with dual electric fan conversion

I've heard that 99 intakes were the best but I will look into that and ill look around for someone to do the throttle body

there are some that run dual stock fans and claim it works fine.

dirtbound offroad has a triple fan setup that is fairly priced. look up web dog he is the owner and can give you more info.

Also a 2.5" exhaust is way too small. Get a 5" from the muffler back and you'll be fast as hell.

By the time you do all these small mods that in most cases only give minimal gains, you could put in a higher performance cam and get a significant change.

About the only two things that will make significant changes in power are displacement and a cam. Once you have either, you might benefit from a more free flowing exhaust or better injectors, but the stock motor isn't helped that much by an exhaust or injectors by themselves.

I actually have a buddy that put a 150 shot on a 97 Cherokee 4.0 all he had was cat delete and ported polished intake manifold. He ran 15 10lb bottles through it and never had a problem. He is actually on YouTube racing. Type in 1badspilo he is one there in like 3 races. That motor was a freak

I actually plan on doing more this winter. I want to port/polish head and intake manifold and put in a cam. One thats not mild but not too big. I just don't know a lot about performance stuff for jeeps. Like where to buy all this stuff at. But for now something quick and easy. Like the tb and e fan

Regearing won't give you more power, but it will be the most noticeable. Even on stock tires it is worthwhile. What transmission do you have? I have a manual and simply swapped in the entire rear axle setup from an auto XJ and it has been the best bang for the buck, including the stroker.

Like others have said you can throw $1000 worth of "performance" parts at the stock 4.0L and you might gain 30 HP if you are lucky but that HP number won't what actually hits the ground at the wheels. If you want real noticeable horsepower then you have to throw some big bucks into it. Bore and stroke the motor, port and polish the heads, more aggressive cam, etc. And if you have oversized tires then re-gear accordingly and you will see alot of performance improvement.

Yeah, you have the 99+ intake already.

The '99 XJ intake was still the old log style. The XJ only got the curved runner intake in '00-'01.

While it's true that the mods I suggested will only yield small gains, the cost is also small. A performance cam is really a waste of time unless you port the head while it's off and if you're going to go strip down 2/3 of the engine to do a cam swap, you might as well go all the way and build a 4.6 stroker 'cause you'd probably need to refresh the bottom end of a 12 year old engine anyway.
Once you've done that, all those other little mods I mentioned earlier will complement the stroker build so they're still worth doing.
