wow, i was jus about to ask about the one i jus found: '86, VERY clean n seems to be rust free mj, 112,000miles, longbed, 4CYLINDER, AUTOMATIC.........is at a dealer, they want $3000. i am aware of pre-'91 4.0 issues and those crappy 2.8s, but what about the 4banger? wit 4bang n auto, does that mean 4.56gears? i don't want it to wheel, jus think it'll be cool to have one to haul my quadracer.

Buying a 1986 ANYTHING at a dealership is going to be a rip off.

Offer them 1k for it if it's rust free. Laugh and walk away if they won't take it.

The 86-down engine compartment is not large enough to swap a 4.0 without some firewall massaging.

waaaay too much for a 4-banger/auto. although i'd take a 4 over the v6 any day of the week. you won't win any races, but it's a tough little motor.

The Jeep 4cyl is a great little motor. I like mine a lot.
