Playin' with my Willys

Scored my steering box today at pull a part. Manual box from a '79 Ford 2wd truck. Got it cleaned up this afternoon and ordered the seals and bearings I need to rebuild and reverse it. This is a big step to make up my mind on how to do this since there's no "typical" way this is done. I looked for a good firewall brake setup but I think I'll be going with a wilwood pedal and.dual master setup. I've used it before and its clean and simple. Once I get the turn and stop part handled it shouldn't be too bad and I can already see the light at the end.

Made some progress this week and got the box rebuilt and reversed and today got the front bracket built and mounted. I still need a forward brace as well as a reinforcing side but I want the pedals in place before I go any further. I'm going to run a wilwood dual master cylinder and balance bar setup mounted to/ through the firewall... Also waiting to collect the parts to modify the drivers steering knuckle to adapt the push pull. Progress, progress, progress.

Subscribed! and secretly waiting for the sale thread :D

great build so far.

Had a relaxing and productive weekend. Picked up a set of 29x10.5 Hoosiers for a good deal. They BARELY clear the tub and I should probably add a .25" spacer for safety.

Got the steering mocked up on the knuckle to the point I can verify that what works in my head can sometimes work in practical application. It still needs some .375" steel gusseting but everything clears great.

Today decided that it probably does need a windshield and I chopped 9.5" from the stock one and layer it back slightly. The glass still functions like stock and the driver mount required some reworking to clear the steering.

Also had a good friend work some aluminum TIG magic on a fuel cell I've had laying around for a few years. Came out great! It will sit above the rear axle and against the tailgate with the fuel lines exiting to the driver side.

Very cool project.

Making good progress Matt!!!

Fuel cell in and back half bracing done. Haven't touched it in a month and decided at 8.30 this morning I would go out in 24° in my house shoes and "tinker." It's now over freezing according to my phone, time to call it quits for the day.

Looks good Matt! ...keep the progress coming!

I'm sad now :(

Well dang. That sucks. The buyer should continue the build thread. I don't care who builds it. I just want to see it finished.

Buyer is putting a 4bt in it!

New owner has a twin turbo 6bt Cummins for it... That's the only thing I would have done differently from Matt's setup. So atleast someone will build one of my dream projects!
