My xj has been sittin in front of my house for about a week now, im trying to figure out where my fuel problem is. anyways, i walk out to work on it today and much to my suprise, theres no jeep. I call the police and they said that the plates expired yesterday so they towed it. If i killed someone, it would take them at least a week to find me, but if my plates are expired, WATCH OUT! now i gotta pay $70 to get the thing out of impound. What a day

Unbelievable.

Around New Haven, cars sit on public streets with NO tags (not even expired, just nothing) literally for months and nothing happens.

Your tax dollars at "work," I guess

Look to your neighbors. If there is an an ordinance against parking inoperable vehicles in a neighborhood street, and your neighbors complain, the cops will wait until the tags have expired before towing it.

Whats the deal? My moms car just got picked up this morning cause hers expired the same day as mine! and she was even at a friends house! Damn they must be crackin down!

Sounds like the tow Nazis got a list of cars from the DMV or the city, because the pigs make mad money off this scam. You might want to look into this, if it happened to you there should be more
in your town.

GEEZE......

Why not just keep your renewals up to date.

Thats settles it, Conn is where Im moving too if I dont go out West!

Here in NYC, you are not legally supposed to have a car without regisration, insurance and plates even if its stored with no engine or wheels inside your garage out of sight!!!!!!! Though this law is not usually enforced, all it takes is a report to the correct authorities by one of your angry or jealous neighbors and youll have 30days to make things right or $1200 fine and more. Ask me how I know  Free country.......my ass.

They impound your vehicle for expired tags in Indiana?

In Texas, you'll get a ticket, but they won't impound your vehicle. In the town I live, there is an ordinance against inoperable vehicles parked on city streets. Usually not enforced unless neighbors complain.

On the other hand, in CT you pay property tax on vehicles - registered or unregistered. And since the tax rate depends on the town's grand list, the rate on a car can vary by a huge amount. When I lived in Falls Village, a relatively poor town, I paid about 3 times the tax someone next door in Salisbury paid for the same car.

Here in Vermont, the taxes seem relatively low taken one at a time, but in sum, it seems we're one of the most taxed states in the country. I dunno! I don't think there's anywhere left!

Viscious cycle and karma

I'm going thru a fight with my owners association. The problem is they changed their water drainage when they expanded the parking lot. As soon as I sent a registered letter they responded that they had passed it on to the town and sent me a nasty gram and a $100 fine for the two magnetic signs I have for my business, citing our covenents not allowing commercial vehicles to be parked outside. OK, I can play, signs are now off and we are getting a lawyer and going for damages and fixing the drainage problem.
Reminds me, I need to register for the openings on the town board coming up for election. God I hate politics but I'm tired of being screwed with, guess I'll just have to become a hammer instead of a nail.

That seems like a short notice to tow a vehicle. Check your local city ordinances or a penal code to see under what conditions they can tow a vehicle sitting on the street. Out in Cali it has to be sitting with tags that are expired for more than six months, and even then we will leave a tag to give you a little notice. If its a non-op found on the street though its ours or found on a busy highway. Hope this will help a little.

Not always true man, it depends on the area. In Torrance for instance a car left sitting for over 72 Hours is illegal, registered or not. How do I know this? Well, I've been hit by it, had some neighbors that didn't like us, and I'd have to move my Jeep every few days to be safe (I was driving my old truck at the time). Look for chalk on your tires, if it's there that means they're verifying that it hasn't moved. You can get away with just jacking up a wheel and spinning the tire too :) (been there, done that!)

WTF!!!???
I got pulled over with expired tabs yesterday and the cop just gave me a warning and told me to do it soon. You guys all live in NAZI controlled states. :looser: :D

My jeeps tag and registration were out for 2 year and I drove it everyday:)
Got pulled over serveral times lots of warnings. Nothing ever happened. I finally got around to getting it done. Got a stupid custom tag to.
