Clockspring repair question

Repairing some old air bag clock springs replaced in previous project to get a new project going. I found and read the post here, but the image links are expired. I found my broken wires, repaired/re-soldered them, and ohmed them out to make sure they were good. In putting everything back together, I realized I don't really know where these plastic fiddlybits actually meant to go. When disassembled, they were just kind of floating around inside between the ribbon cable, not really attached to anything. I guess this could have been why there was a failure to begin with...

Do I need to glue these back into place? If so, in what orientation? Also, do I need to add some kind of grease back to these? There was a lot in there, but it was really nasty and full of broken plastic chunks, so I've pulled most of it out.

Thanks!
