Pinion Gear Moved?

It just occurred to me: The Auburn requires a ridge on the inside of the case to be trimmed/ground down(I have on in mine). Unless they've changed the design, if the dif housing isn't clearanced , the dif case will rub the housing, and make it impossible to adjust backlash properly. If I recall right, mine wouldn't even go in without the cut. Maybe they didn't clearance the case properly, then set the pinion deep to try to make the gears mesh?

sounds good guys-no offense taken to my skill in doing it-thats why i went ahead and had a shop do it when it was having some other stuff done.
The clearance issue sounds like a good possibility, ill definately have a shop that knows their stuff do it. I have a contact at the jeep dealership down the road that had offered to do it for me already so im gonna look into that.
Ill keep you posted on what i find out

Do you have the documentation that came with the Auburn? I recall the instructions were pretty clear on the cutting, but if you didn't read the pamphlet, you'd never know it had to be done(at least until it wouldn't fit right) I got in an argument with my friend(a dodge/jeep mechanic) about it because while he's rebuilt dozens/hundreds of 8.25s, he'd never put an Auburn in one before. I'd read the instructions when I bought it, and had to force him to read it before he'd break out his grinder.

If the OUTER pinion race was not seated at install it would seat when driven allowing pinion to move deeper into carrier. Ive seen it happen several times. Another thing is if the RH side adjuster backed out or was crooked and the carier is now vary loose, it could be the carrier that made its way up against the pinion. Most likely the other way around.

If the pinion race was not seated then the pinion would have moved away from the ring gear when it did seat. It's possible the backlash might have changed due to some error with the adjusters but it would have to change an awful lot to put the pinion into the ring gear that far. I believe the gears were set up way too deep and when the pinion wore into the ring gear far anough it made contact with the carrier. In any case it looks like the shop that did the gears should not be doing gears. It totally looks like installer error. You need at least a new ring and pinion and maybe all new bearings as well.

well the shop in town quoted me 600 bucks to have it fixed today-im really thinking of buying the tools and taking a couple months with it in my garage. Really the only things i would need to purchase that my pops doesnt have are the side adjusters for the 8.25 and a bearing press. Also talked to my guy at the jeep dealership-it closed and now he's at a dodge dealership and they wont touch a jeep with aftermarket gears...but he is willing to help me if i get the tools he just doesnt have the ability to take the ones he needs out of the shop. So should i just order up some new bearings-see what i screw up and if all else fails take it to a shop then?

Are you saying that the shop that installed your gears is going to charge you to fix it?

Same exact thing happend to me. The pinion nut was loose the first time so i tightened it up. Ran good for about two weeks and started grinding again, but the pinion nut was tight this time. It wore the pinion gear teeth where it was making contact with the carrier. I was gonna just have a new shop re-set them with new bearings but the shop said they couldn't warranty there work using the existing gears because of the wear they had. Ended up having to buy a new set of gears and bearings and having them re-installed.
