Ok, Sorta looking to pick something up to keep my life in check. What I want is something that has wireless that I can use w/ my Netgear wireless system at home. Something I can use to check email, hook up to a GPS antenna and store lots of maps on. Most important is something I can use between my home computer and work computer....so i can add dates and meetings and have the 2 computers sync up and stay up to date...remind me of meetings and store lots of notes and phone numbers.

Has to be color and if it had a phone it would be a plus.

The market seems flooded w/ choices

Some claim Palm is the bomb....but others say Palm is outdated and underpowered and overpriced.....from what i have seen on Cnet i have to agree. Seems like you get more power and memory for MS devices, but like all things MS you need more to do less?

What do you guys that are "in the know" think?

Thanks
Chewy

Go with the iPaq.

They are incredibly fast, fully expandable, and theres a model for every price range.

DO NOT go with Palm. Even theyre neer ones just DONT hold a candle whatsoever, even to the iPaq 3955 model. (Which retails around 400 bucks).

The 3955 is bluetooth compatible, with the expansion card, plays Mp3's, plays movies (and you can fit a whole movie on one expansion card, for those long plane rides, or whatever), it literally does everything Palm does, only it does it better.

I sell both, and I recomment Palm very rarely. Mainly its when people want something cheap, and I either give em the 505, or the Zire. (Although the newer Zire with the camera is interesting, its a bit of a novelty, since its lacks any features at all).

(EDIT)
Read through your post again. Wantd to make sure i covered everything.

the expandable iPaqs can do GPS. Although im not sure if they call can download maps, thatd be something youd have to look up.

I have an IPAQ 3760 and an older Palm color. I carry the Palm with me everywhere and grab it 20-30 times a day. I rarely use the IPAQ. It runs Windows CE and has alot more power than the Palm. The Palm does the simple things very well without the complexity of the IPAQ. I charge the Palm battery about every week or two. The IPAQ struggles to make it through a weekend on a charge, even with very little usage.

The Palm is so simple and easy to use that I actually DO use it.

I can't say how it will match up to your wish list, but it's a pretty cool tool.

Chewy, when we get our drink and our snack awn next week, you can check out Burt's Dell if you want, before you buy.

I still think a palm is a waste of money for you anyway, I mean, do you really need a palm to schedule your next hair frosting appointment?

Since the inception of the handheld back in the early 90's battery life and speed have been palm's key selling point. I haven't used either but I would say that I would give a long hard look at Handspring since they are the creators of the Palm. i know th handspring has a lot of really cool add-on's that make it one of the most versatile PDA's.

FYI:

Same people started both companies.

Handspring uses the Palm OS under license.

Palm just announced a deal to buy Handspring a day or two ago.

One of the things I do is a wireless point of sale system to food service business's that the waiters, waitress's can take you your order at the table and it is printing out at the foodprep and bar areas once it is taken and also has a credit card swipe attached to the belt. I use handheld PC's for this. The iPaq's last about 2 shifts without recharge. Wife has a palm Vx but it only gets used for phone numbers, dates and stuff like that. Hate to say it but the handheld PC has alot more features that you are looking for. Figure about $500 for the PC with wireless card.

Beezil,
Burt got a Dell...cool, i will check it out.. I like what i see in those but they are "said" to be too bulky. I will have to check it out.

I need to keep my hair appointments...thats very important/// also lots of phone #'s and business info on it. I also want something i can play with to make it all worthwhile. Like i said a WiFI option is almost a must have...
I would alos like to have an option to add memory.... i dont think palms allow that... i have seen ones that use the same memory that my digi cam uses and like that idea since i have 2) 256meg cards.

Yes Jeff Hawkins started Palm way back in the day and then left Palm to start Handspring. They licensed the Palm OS (Hawkins creation) to use on their new Handspring. Most of handspring is actually the original Palm company. So Palm isn't the original Palm and Handspring is all the original employees that created Palm.

Handspring has Windows and Palm OS PDA's.
