Painting the XJ Desert Tan

I'm thinking just the brown camo from Krylon. I think I'll do just the raised section of the hood brown, I haven't decided on the bumpers yet. I think the rear will match the Jeep (tan) and maybe do the front in black with the sliders either brown or tan.

Just to throw some ideas at you...how about painting the raised portions of the hood flat or satin black. I think satin black looks a bit better. Then you could paint the front bumper, sliders, rear bumper and wheels black to match the hood. I think it would look a bit better than 2 different browns.

Im going to paint the raised portions of my hood with John Deere Blitz Black. This guy used vinyl on his hood but Im painting mine similar to this.

hhhmmmmm.
yup. you sold me on that. looks good AND suits the purpose too.

I've thought of that as well. I plan on doing the rear bumper the same color as the XJ and then the front and sliders the same as the hood.

Sorry, I'm a slacker, and haven't finished yet. We'll see what happens tomorrow. If I have time after installing the front bumper, I'll try to finish painting the XJ.

Not nearly enough pics of Tan in this thread... (hurry up there Darky) :)

And since I am undecided about mine and keep jumping back and forth on so many colors and methods of application, let me ask you guys this:

Krylon Khaki (#4291) or Rustoleum Khaki (#1917830) ??

They appear to be quite different shades.

I've got pictures from SoCal Fest this weekend; I got everything painted except the hood and front clip.

krylon is lighter, correct?
id go with the lighter.

The cap color of the Rustoleum Khaki looked pretty dark in person. Here's a small pic but I think the cap was darker in person:

Now correct me if I'm wrong, the Krylon looks to be a newer version of their camo series. I remember before they specifically had a "Desert Tan" color which was indeed a light shade of tan. This newer one looks a little darker:

I use a lot of Krylon paint on other stuff and like it a lot. A concern with using this new stuff though is it says its a "Fusion" paint which I know is good for plastics. But anyone know if Fusion paint like this is still just as good on metal? (I know it says metal on the can, but looking for real world experiences and opinions if you guys have any)

Darky, what paint did you use and where are your pics?

I used the Krylon Ultra Flat in your 2nd pic. Used about 8 cans for the whole thing, but I'll probably be doing another coat or two so probably 15 cans total. Pics will be forthcoming. In the meantime, I made an appearance in someone else's pics from Big Bear...:D
In the background of the first pic.

As you can see, I need to go back and do some cleanup work on the glass and tail lights. I'm also hoping that the next coat will take care of the bit of splotchiness.

Almost done, just gotta paint the clip and hood. I'll probably redo the raised portion in satin black and the rest in tan. Satin black because I already have a can left over from the first paint job.

I'm going to sand it smooth and put more coats on until it's a nice smooth even finish. I just sprayed it on to get ready for SoCal Fest.

After you sand spray a "tackcoat" meaning go lightly. Then back it up with a heavier (normal) coating till finished.

I'v read this will give the paint a good surface to adhere to. Thats generally what they recommend if you dont lay all your paint down at the same time, and go back to it later. Theres some good info on using spraybomb at www.ih8mud.com.

I've done a few samples with Krylons flat olive drab camo. Love the results! Overland's is mint in my view. I plan on taking off the removable doors and doing 1 door per weekend, maybe get 2 in, as many coats as I can practically. Do you guys think there will be any longevity problems with the flat Krylon? I plan on roughing up the paint thats there now. And I think I like the painting over the door handles.
