Painting fuel rail.. what to do about injector boses?

I'm planing on repainting the fuel rail on my XJ. Light rust and ulgy. Its sanded down on the outside. However, I haven't touched the injector bosses. There is a bit of light rust on them. What should i do about them? The paint i am using is RustBullet which can hold up to gas after 72 hours (plenty). But I am worried about putting too much or some other problem that will stop the injector from sealing. What to do? Leave them alone or repaint them too?

Sand down the outside surface - all of it.

Remove everything.

Cut/tear small squares of masking tape, and stick them down on the injector bosses, the QD connectors, and the regulator socket. Don't wrap the tape around - just block the hole.

Hang and paint. When you're done, the tape squares will peel right off and you won't have painted anything inside the fuel rail. Works better than stoppers, too (I've done this with both.)

I use foam earplugs for a lot of stuff like that. Provided that the hole is the same size they tend to do very well. easier than masking off the holes and ending up with unpainted spots

Those can work, but I've had issues with chipping around holes when I stoppered them. I don't fold the tape over and around the hole - I just stick a square over the end of the tube, and leave it at that. It separates rather more cleanly than a stopper, I've found.

If you want an image (I haven't a picture,) just imagine setting a water glass open end down on a sheet of paper - that's it. The difference is the size (the tube is, natch, smaller) and the fact that the paper is sticky.

I have never used them for a blind hole, used them on the bearing holes in the throttle body for instance, I pulled them through from the inside.

I used paint mask at work. Cut the plugs out on the plotter and some for the ID of the injector bosses.

Now.. I just have do decide if I want to brush the rustbullet on or spray it on with a touch up paint gun..
