Just a shot of " La Famiglia Jeep" at the Outer Banks (Corova) last week.

Since that time we've endured an earthquake (WTH?) and we're bracing for Irene. Glad we got our vacation in early this year.

ive heard that this hurricane is capable of "rearranging the landscape" of the outer banks area.

but i also heard it on fox news

I was out there about 2 weeks ago, it's badass. Apparently even just the currents intersecting at the point are enough to have the sand banks different every year.

A good day of rain will shift the shore around from the surf to the dunes.
Our neighbors just got back today as Dare County called a mandatory evacuation of all visitors. Thankfully they opted for the Hurricane vacation insurance.
Mother Nature will always have the last word. :D

Yeah, I was down there this week. Vacation got cut short and we had to come home yesterday. I was staying up in Corolla right across from the Harris Teeter. This is the 2nd year in a row we had to evacuate because of a hurricane.

Nice rig!
Did you do the LeBaron louver mod or install the RunCool's ?
How much of a temperature drop do you notice at the gauge with them installed?

Loooove the Corolla Area. Last time I was there, there was a pretty nasty storm (no evacuation). Everyone was ducking for cover, while I was blasting down the offroad beach in the rain doing 50 over the dunes. So much fun, not a soul in sight. This year I was in Nag's head for a few days but the jeep had baby tires so it stayed on the road.

One things for sure, that sand will have a field day with your cooling system in a hurry! I was in Wilmington for the 4th and my jeep lasted about 10 minutes before coolant was puking out the overflow bottle. But that was before the new motor :)

cool shots I was in assateague Island a few weeks ago.....

fear the turtle!!!

lemme know when youall head down in the future-- I'm a Terp and only an hour and some change from there!!

Yeah, they are "domesticated" wild ponies. They hang around the campsites looking for fresh water and will occasionally chew into a tent to get to your Cheerios. Rangers say that they love cereal, the grains and oats I guess. They roam the marsh and campsites all day and night. Lots of deer too. That's my favorite place to go camping

Ah, Assateague. Another favorite spot to camp. The National park is what's up. Alcohol allowed, beach open 24 hours, as long as you're not "sleeping" on it, and we've made a bonfire or two before. When I was 18 I got a drinking citation in the state park right next to it. Little did I know alcohol was prohibited there lol. We also used to frequent Chincoteague often when I was a kid. And yes, wild ponies everywhere.

Edit: Wow found some old gems. This is Assateague, in my first Jeep about 6 years ago. Nothin like a little morning shred to start the day off right.

I've lived in western, ma and boston (for a short while) my whole life and have not been out there :( I will have to change that next summer when the jeep is done (err never really done) Does it cost anything to access the beaches and parks?

When I was in Corolla, OBX the offroad beach was free, but I don't remember if it was during the week or not. In Wilmington, NC it was $10 all day. In Assateague, MD it's free (after the park fee) but you need an ORV pass. I've never gotten the pass, and I've never been hassled about it. Something like $70 yearly.

Assateague is around 100 for a year. I generally buy it in august and then go a month earlier the following year before it expires so I get 2 summers out of it, but its not cheap.

a dumb vid driving, and you can see the pass just above the inspection stickers

I hear that. On the first day or so we were there, I was rolling back down the beach towards the paved road when I checked my gauges to see the trans temp pegged at 250 and the engine temp pegged at 260. I stopped and popped the hood for a bit and my coolant overflow bottle was shaking because the coolant was boiling so much.

A big group of us go down every year usually in late August. The past two years we've been evacuated by hurricanes, so we might try early August next year. About half of us went to UMD

I took some gopro vids of me running through the dunes and down the beach. One of these days I'll edit and post em up.

This place looks awesome, I'd love to go down there.
