Original motor? and ECT location

I just bought my 88 cherokee and I was wondering if there is anyway to tell if it has the original motor in it like matching up serial numbers or something? also I'am curious of the location of my ECT sensor. The book says its on the thermostat housing but theres no sensors on mine.
