One tough sheriff

The problem is the US has gotten soft. It seems if you look at someone the wrong way something can be filed against you. The problem is the lack of states that use the death penalty.

Whenever I think of the death penalty I think of Ron White doing one of his stand ups where he talks about how in Texas if 3 eye witnesses see you commit a heinous crime, you don't sit on death row, you go to the front of the line. It's true, more states should do this, theres no reason that my tax money should go to someone who is going against society instead of going towards something for society.

But I agree with the person that says there has to be pain involved with the punishment otherwise the punishment means nothing. They go to prision for a few years and come out even more pist at society.

The thing that makes it so hard are cases like this. I just read in the news some guy sat on death row for like 20 something yeras b/c they thought he killed his g/f's kid. Well with new DNA testing it turns out that a neighbor actually did it and not him. So even though he was convicted if we had the no sitting on death row, he woulda been killed when he didn't do anything wrong. Its a tough fine line.

As hard as I would like the prisons to be on convicts and as much as I would like to see death row expedited, I would also like to see our court system become more diligent so unfortunate things like that dont happen. Our current court system is a joke. The person with the money is the one who wins. Im not sure what to do about it but it needs to change if we intend to use death row as it should be used.

Way too many people get falsely convicted to make intimidate death penalties viable or right. Hell all you have to do to get convicted sometimes is to be poor and scum in the eyes of society (Be it economic discrimination, racial, religious, or other).

If somebody proposed getting rid of appeals I would jump right up and scream no. That is an important basis of our legal system.

A Piece of Paris

In May 2007, Arpaio was featured in the entertainment press for publicly asking the Los Angeles authorities to transfer Paris Hilton to Maricopa County to serve her jail sentence. His requests were "respectfully declined."

Here here, I highly support this man. Given how much our cdountry looks to Hollywood as a land of 'what could be', it's a shame that our celebrities walk with such freedom around the legal system. Just because you have money should not put you above the law. Yes, I know, it ultimately does, due to better attornies, PR people, etc.

The biggest influence I've noticed with regards to Hollywood is where I work. In the university setting, I've noticed a rapid rise of 'Paris-like' styles, attitudes, etc. that I encounter on an almost daily basis. At first, it was just the random person, primarily women, who were flippant or arrogant. I attributed it to the undergrad phenomena of college, and wrote it off. But now, when I hear their conversations revolving (and yes, I mean revolving, i.e. nothing but talking about her and her legal troubles, humanitarian efforts, how the legal system is seeking her out unjustly) and watching this occur in more than 6 seperate conversations this past week amongst different people each time.....I'm scared. Frankly, I'm terrified.

If there is this much of an impact from someone who bears no reason for interest other than the trouble she gets in and how much she can succeed off of her looks.....what happens when someone who is coniving and manipulative with looks gets into the public spotlight? There is too much emphasis placed on people 'with influence' simply because they are in the media, and simply because they get the 'tv face time' that comes with their jobs.

Maybe if more of them spent time in Mr. Arpaio's style jails, instead of the comfort/luxury resorts they are accustomed to, a difference of opinion towards law enforcement and the legal system might trickle down into the opinions that I hear expressed around here, and the wonderful people of Tinseltown could have a positive instead of negative impact on the younger generations that look to them for guidance and role models.

[/end rant]

Edit: dang this was long. my bad. just started typing and didn't stop. oh well.......so be it!:soapbox:

Anyone who looks to Paris Hilton or any one of a thousand other Doofuses in Hollyweird deserves whatever they get. The kids with a brain dont see these people as anything more than entertaining, the rest of the kids, who cares what happens to them. I really dont want them to make anything of themselves anyway. Thats all we need, the next generation of doctors, lawyers, presidents, engineers ect., Paris Hilton followers. I think not.
