Oil Leak Question.

ok i cleaned it off yesterday and drove it to work and back home. i let its sit for a little while and inspected it. The oil is coming from the top and dripping down the side of the bell housing and then finally dripping from the bottom of the bell housing. also there is oil coming from the passenger side of the oil pan, i looked directly up and i see the oil filter adapter and it looks wet, so im guessing the o rings need replacing. well this afternoon i popped the hood and reached my hand behind the valve cover and pulled my hand out and my hand was covered in oil. So im guessing my problems are my valve cover gasket needs to be redone and my o rings in the oil filter adapter need to be replaced? Did i nail it?

Sounds right to me - you should be able to finish the job in an afternoon.

The through screw for the oil filter elbow can be 5/8" hex (taking a regular wrench - I've seen this one on RENIX,) 5/8" hex socket (requiring a slightly modified hex key) or something like a T60 or T65 (requiring work and a little fabrication - the common approach seems to be welding the cut-off end of the proper size Torx socket key into a cheap-O end wrench.) Verify which you have before you start working on anything...

ok cool. I dont have access to a welder or anything. but im going to still let my buddy look at it just to see what he says, but as far as the VC gasket. I did it myself with the help of a friend about a year ago, and i used a fel pro cork gasket, and i guess i did it wrong since im having to do it again, but is that the "right" gasket to get? and also, can i get the o rings from a parts store? or does it have to be from the dealer?

i know some will disagree, but i think you should go with a molded, metal/rubber fel pro permadry VC gasket. its by far easier to install the permadry gasket than a cork gasket and rtv. it will also not leak in a year like cork gaskets, in my experience, tend to do.

do it right once and dont look back.

I use cork gaskets, and I don't have any trouble with them. I've posted up the easy way to make sure they don't leak here before, so I know it can be found (with specific reference to the valve cover gasket, in fact.)

It's easier to get the O-rings from the dealer - they can look up the sizes of the things without having them on the counter. You'll have to pull them out to get them anywhere else, since you'll need to measure them (ID/OD/"wire diameter.") There may be measurements posted up here, but I don't recall specifically and they're not in my list of subscriptions.
