O.K. B's Build Thread

I can't believe I have never gotten in on your build thread Matt, I love everything you've done to it. This mod is my favorite though, especially since I was the one you were talking about ;)

Great wheeling with you again :)

Ha ha ! Yea you inspired me to worry more about my intake situation !

I have to say I couldnt be happier with it .
We had wheeled at my park and i thought i was happy with it, mainly for the sound lol. ( I avoid water normally)
But after going through some of the deep puddles around the Badlands and feeling so calm and unconcerned about my motor I am really liking it now.
You should see all the mud where the stock airbox used to be from W.F. !

There were jeeps bigger than me going around or taking a shallower line while i calmly drove on through .
I don't think i had a time where i opened my hood and didnt get some kind of looks or questions about it .

There will definitely be more to come , I am still on track with my original build i did on paper and there are some great mods left on the "To do " side of the list.

I Had a great time wheeling with you and just hanging out , you got my # now hit me up any time and maybe well hang out before next year .

After a conversation with Flex at W.F. about my rocker rails i remembered i had Some outer tube steps sitting way in the back of a packed closet at home.

They will be great to guide me along a tree or what not without dragging it down my body.
Also like flex said they make great handles for getting up and down while working on it ! ( i use my front pre runner bars for monkeybars too)

My daughter could use a step too .

So I dug them out and after the fun we had at W.F. it was easy to get Chachi to weld em on.

You can see the plastic guard in the rear had been slid down a few things before these rails it stuck out the farthest.

I got these from Aj's Offroad at a custom length that was origionally intended to leave a 1/2" on either side , but we decided it was better for them to sit as far back as possible. It ended up perfect it stops right at the front door seam and lines up with the rear fender line .

I am pretty happy with what i got from AJ's but the spacers they gave us were small

Chachi got the gap filled in and I threw some paint on and BAM !! they look great and my rocker replacement finally is complete !

In the limited time i have had them on i can tell that i will love them for the protection and look but not like how far they stick out when i get in and out.
Before i could step in and out easily now I have to like slide over the bar with my leg on the way in and slide out over it , I bet this will be fun in the heat of summer.

If you were considering using these as a step it looks like my daughter 9 can actually use them as a step but anyone taller might as well just step over the thing.

Her official review is pending

Man, he took my advice....I got this dude fooled! :D

You will love the protection, but hate getting your pants leg dirty sliding in and out. Been there.

But 3 out of 4 doors not smashed to hell is totally worth it! :D

I got them from DPG Offroad (great company to work with)

They are the JKS rear adjustable bump kit i think the part # is JKS 1150
It looks as if JKS might have discontinued them, But I found them here after a search:

http://www.carolinaclassictrucks.com/JKS-1150.html

It looks like DPG has re released their version of them That i beleive is a bit cheaper ,If these were available when i bought my lift id probably have gone with them.

Of course one could always fab a set if the skills and tools are available to you.
The current option is made by Currie:

And to the OP, when it comes to E-brake cables, I finally replaced my insanely-freaking-long Liberty cables with these:

http://www.jeep4x4center.com/rough-trail-disc-brake-cable-34-25-dbc-07.html

Well made and a perfect fit.

I don't mind the length the drivers side is fine ..
One big loop zip tied up out of the way on the passenger side and i have no issues there either..

However i wanted new lines and the only libby ones i found were way more expensive than those you listed so If I had it to do over i would use the ones you listed.

O.K. So After Cutting my rear bumper to get it off after having a hard time with the bolts During the Gas Tank skid Install, we had Tacked it on and on our next trip out to Washita offroad Park we lost it.

So I ordered A JCR Rear Cut and Fold Bumper , It required cutting out the part of the body behind the tire and now you can see my leaf springs, shackle and exhaust hanging out.

I think for looks I might have preferred the same bumper with the full size wrap around armor that covers the rear lower quarter panel instead of cutting it out .

Performance wise this one is stronger and a rock has to be mid thigh on me for it to hit after my rear tire drops off of it.

In the End it Grew on me and If I went with the Full bumper I would've likely regretted it on the occasions the corners hit rocks.

While I was buying new nut strips and taking the rear apart I wanted to get everything I planned to do to the rear in the future done that required Taking that area apart.. ( rear Uni-body stiffeners Planned for Later)

So I Did HD Offroads shackle relocation brackets to improve my shackle angle that was vertical After my lift.
My bushings are shot in my leafs so those will be next , I think they took more abuse from being vertical and jamming upward instead of swinging out when the leafs cycle.

The Relocation brackets gave me a minimal amount of lift that I think evened my rig out a bit, Hd Offroad now sells a no lift relocation bracket as well for those that don't want the minor added lift.
The rear Rides way nicer over bumps on the road now and the shackle will Drop out when i flex the rear now Giving me more Flex ( I should get a pic of that prolly ).

Okay Here Is the Bumper , Its Quarter panel armor and all its Brackets Painted

And The Shackle Relocation Brackets Painted

This Is the Area That Gets cut out and Then the remainder Folded Up to cover.

And The Second Part Folding up to Cover

Fold_zps9649f310.jpg

Thanks to Naxja walkthroughs it got Cut and folded So well that It has a nice clean flat 45 degree piece at the corner.

Cleancornerfold_zpsaa552a03.jpg

After a Few coats of Spray on rubber Coating The Outside is sealed I used this on the inside , and then used silicone on the inside to fill gaps , and then sprayed the rubber coating over it .
The rubber coating drips down through the cracks nicely before it rubberizes .
It takes a long time to dry but is pretty solid rubber when fully cured.

Here You can see the rear bumper mount and the Rear Frame Tie in that goes from the bumper to the same nut strip as the gas tank skid.
And the shackle relocation brackets from the rear.

RearBracketsandBumpermounts_zpsf6a960bd.jpg

Here You can see the Side Frame Tie In for the Quarter Panel Armor also to the Gas tank Skid Nut Strip.
And The Shackle relocation brackets from the side ( Not in the position the shackle ended up in yet though)

RelocBracketandFrametiein_zps44ff5f70.jpg

And Finally here you can see the Final Shackle Location at a perfect 45 degree angle .
I did have to trim The exhaust because it hit the shackle bolt that is now lower than stock on the top side , this is because I run stock length shackles.
Since my shackle is no longer vertical I ended up with minimal lift.

I had planned to measure my pinion angle to see if it changed from the perfect 2 degrees under I had originally dialed it in to.
But I do not have any vibes to lead me to believe it changed much.

You can also See the 2 Flush Bolts That help Tie the Quarter armor to the rear bumper , And the 2 others that tie the rear quarter armor to the rear Quarter panel.

Other than the receiver being a bit loose I love this whole setup and after towing a bit with it that doesn't bother me anymore.

One Morning I wasn't paying attention and backed my rig right into a concrete wall at the corner pretty hard and forgot about my armor, I was pissed that I likely dented up my Rig and cracked a taillight .

It did Virtually Zero Damage with this solid setup!

That armor, bumper and cut and & fold really blend well. Nice and clean.

Looks great Matt! Love it!

Yea I'm Glad I left those plastic trim pieces that run across the doors The armor pretty much lines up with them and is shaped to look a lot like them.
The look has really grown on me and I am really picky.

Looks great Matt! Love it!

Thanks Collin I spend a lot of time obsessing over this rig !

Any benefits to tuck and fold with stock bumper?

There is definately a clearance advantage , even a slight one over my armored setup.

iirc I saw quite a few cut like this at W.F. Some with and some without the wrap around armor under the cut and fold.

iirc I saw at least one where the raised quarter had been smashed. .
That would not be easily cut out cleanly like a stock one getting cut out for clearance or to remove a smashed or rusted stock one.

Im betting with the wheeling I do I wont hit or very rarely will and I'm protected when I do

So if you did smash it you would have to live with the body damage
( not a problem for most jeepers) or cut it out and weld in new sheet .

If I ever get around to it i'll do this to my Spare'okee budget rig.
I'll likely cut the stock bumper at a 45 degree to remove the lower outer corners of the bumper. And then cut and fold the rear quarters.

The Spare'okee came with some body damage and hack job cut fenders for 31's.
All i did was cut out the sway bars check bump stops and voila $700 wheeling rig that i don't have to be careful with!

For a DD i am not a fan of the look of the cut and fold because you can see the shackle leaf exaust and uni body rail all hanging out.
The wraparound guard covers the uni body and some shackle for a cleaner look imo .

Ymmv,
O.K.B.

OK so It's update time .
When I did my Shackle relocation I noticed some things needed freshening up.
So I did New Leaf bushings , new shackles and while I was at it measured my Drive shaft angles.

I came up with it being 2 and 1/2 degrees under and according to my Build thread that means it moved up about 1/2 a Degree .
It is still what I would say is a good Driveline angle besides my leafs may have broken in a bit since then and I don't use a Digital finder so It could've moved less than that really .

I also Has a rear bump rusted off so I got the Quadratech 4.1" ones .
they are bigger than the stock ones but thats OK since i plan to go up to 33's ASAP !

Now for some Pics of my new Cosmetic type mods .

Ever since I became aware of the "stock option" XJ spoiler that came on the Euro only Orvis Luxury XJ model I couldn't decide whether I loved or hated it .

What I did decide is that They did a good job of making a part that I just assumed would be hideous look good with the design of the XJ .
I think the fact that it is different looking won me over and I started looking for one .

I found a Guy on E-bay "breaking" (parting out in UK lingo) an Orvis XJ in the Uk .
The listing was for a rim But I sent him an E-mail about the Rear spoiler and asked if he happened to have the also rare A-pillar tweeters .
Not only did he have them both but he was willing to ship to U.S. for me !

I went on spoilerlights.com iirc and ordered a new L.E.D. third brake light for it .
This was another thing that won me over about the spoiler , apparently no one makes aftermarket silver or smoked 3rd brake lights for the XJ and the stock one just kinda looks just slapped up there imo .

While I was at it I Painted and installed my rear hatch I got from Flex at W.F. so no more dented up Hatch !!

Here are the parts as they came :

Orvisparts_zps2b2c8397.jpg

Here is the A-pillar tweeter installed , I think they look awesome but they honestly don't put out much sound and there really isn't much room for a bigger tweeter in there.

SpeakerPod_zpsc55835f0.jpg

And finally the Orvis Rear spoiler w L.E.D. 3rd brake lights !!

Spoilerxj_zps5b350aaa.jpg

It makes my XJ a bit Different looking and in the end the shape mirrors my aftermarket bumper very nicely .
