NOT bragging now...

OK, Wife dog & I are up in Evans yesterday (3-Mar) and did the 198 trail. Got to try out the new winch per the open diffs and 225x15's. Anyways. coming out on sr165 before carbonado, right before the one lane bridge, we notice a recognizable Jeep wheel, tire and axle shaft assembly racing ahead of us in the opposite lane. Can you believe that?
Hmm. Not suppose to happen.
Anyone ever toss an axle like that. It's not broke, it just left where it's suppose to be. Is that the C-clip people talk about?
I took it apart, of course the bearings fell out, a brake shoe is thrashed (lifetime warranty, can't wait to see the look on Autozone face when I take it back, he he).
I pull the diff cover off but did'nt see anything, what should I look for? I've never done axle work before.
I had to have it towed, $198 from Carbo to Roy.

Deffinitly sounds like your center pin came out OR the C-clip broke - More likely considering both axles would be on the ground if your center pin was gone... That sucks... Sounds like it's time for an upgraded axle...

Will.

LMAO, you guys are so silly

No, no, no...turn this thread off. It's entirely too silly. We cannot have any of that now.

While your breakage sucks, I have another issue with your post...

Why would you take the brake parts back to autozone??? What part of this scenario has anything to do with a brake shoe failure? The brake shoe is warranteed for it's lifetime against FAILURE OR DEFECTS. If the axle shaft broke and mangled the shoe, did the shoe fail? If you axle seal fails and pukes gear oil all over the brake shoe, did the brake shoe fail? Most "lifetime" warranties cover the product against defects in materials or workmanship for the LIFE of the part. If the brake shoe WEARS out and is due for replacement, the LIFE of the part is over. Being in the professional automotive industry, I get this misconception a lot and it bugs the hell out of me.

Rant off. :)

I just want to see the look on the guys face.
Really though, I just replaced the shoes a couple weeks ago. It's just one shoe that was damaged when the axle came out. I wonder if I'll have to buy all four again. Probably. Frustrating. Glad it did'nt happen on the trail.
This 35c does not have the C- clip. I guess it's just held in by having the bearings pressed in. Sounds kinda weak.
Avanteone, you might know; in the non c clip dana 35, on the outter part of the axle, is the assembly inner seal-bearing-outer seal? is there anything else I need? (besides a brake shoe) :wierd:

You need the seals and bearing, the new bearing will come with the new retainer. You need to look very closely at your shaft and make sure the area it sits is not damaged. I have several replacements out of parts rigs sitting on my shelf. You will also need someone to press the unit together if you aren't 100% sure if what you're doing. NAPA charges like $20 to do it.

I used a dremel to clean up a little road rash on the tip of the spline.
There is a small gouge on the axle housing, I'll smooth it out.
I believe I've tapped in bearings before, its been years.
Amazing what an inexpensive part can do.
My Jeep and Kawi are broke right now, I've got some work to do.... :repair:
