I've been lurking on here for a bit now and figured it was time to post.
I'm getting back into the wheeling scene here in CO. after being gone for 6 years! Previously I had a stockish '86 toyota pickup on 31's locked front/rear. That was a fun truck! I've had a couple of stock XJ's and figured I'd try one for my next wheeling rig.
Here's my XJ, it's a '91, 4.0 AW4, D30/8.25, has about 135K miles on it.
It's on 32" BFG A/T's. It already had the lift and front bumper when I got it, any guesses as to how much lift it has on it by looking at the pics?
I'm thinking 4-4.5" since its running 32's with no trimming except where the front bumper goes. Also does anyone know if this front bumper is a mass produced unit? I've seen a lot of similar bumpers but this one is a bit different, with the brush/grill guard setup, I like the basic design of it. But I'm not crazy about the grill guard part, it looks kinda ghetto IMO.
In one of the pics the hood is open, it has some overheating issues only when wheeling, that was on Kelly Flatts. It also randomly stalls out. Which made for an interesting time going up heart attack hill.
Hopefully soon I can find some time to work on it. Currently it needs:
a new battery, the 32's are a bit worn (I'm debating on which tires to get 31's, 32's or just get 33's, I'd like 33's but 32's on stock gears already sucks!) ZJ clutch fan and hood vents. Also I've gotta figure out why its stalling, though it may be related to it running hot, other idea's are possibly fuel pump (I've replaced the filter) but doesn't add up because it only does it on the trail, it's fine everywhere else. Has anyone had any work done by SFF customs in Denver? I'd like to re-gear for 33's anyway and since that will likely run about $800ish for parts/labor their $1200 price tag for a fully installed and re-geared F/R 8.8 swap seems pretty reasonable. I'm not real concerned about the 8.25 I have now, but the rear disks would be nice. I'm in Greeley, anyone else on here from around this area? Don;t know of any people to go wheeling with anymore and don't like tackling big stuff when I'm running solo. On to the pics!

Run. as fast as possible from sff customs. seriously. run. delete their number and email. josh is a complete jackass and is banned from multiple sites for.screwing people over.

4.5" sounds right. and as for stalling my guess is fuel pump assy. mine used to do same thing when nosed up or down. Ended up being.the pickup.
if you do hood vents put them on front of hood, not the rear like you usually see.
also putting fan on a switch isn't bad idea.

Yeah I've done some google searches on SFF and came up with mixed reviews. But it struck me somewhat odd that they would advertise on CL but they are nowhere to be found on any forums. Most custom shops spread word around on local forums...
Just tempting because the price is reasonable, and I'm due for new tires and would really prefer just to do 33's the first time but not so much with 3.55 gearing. I may just throw some cheap 31's on it for now to get me by, its not a DD.
The fuel pump assembly is my first guess also, its just weird because its not necessarily when its nose up or down, and it drives fine around town and on the highway.
Good to know on the hood vents, I think they will help quite a bit.
Part of the issue is my E-fan doesn't come on at all! The A/C in my jeep is disconnected, the compressor is still there but theres nothing hooked up to it (maybe make it into an OBA setup?). The E-fan was hooked up but never came on when it got hot (over 210-220). I tested it directly and the fan itself works, the relay is ok, it just doesn't come on like its supposed to.
I pulled it out until I can get the chance to just wire it directly to a switch, I'll never need it unless I'm wheeling (especially with vents).

I can tell you this from very personal and lengthy experience, all josh at sff checks is backlash. he doesn't adjust pinion depth or check gear pattern. just adds gears, makes sure it feels tight and.zips em on. no correct preload, it's just "tight" with an impact. do you get gears tossed in cheap? sure. are they gonna grenade? you bet.

Agreed -- PM dutchvdub, the price will be nearly as cheap as the craptastic SFF, and you can live easy knowing the gears aren't going to explode on you.

Welcome aboard!

man i cant believe i missed this thread but ill second or third what every one above said. Rich (dutchvdub) is a helluva guy and does great work...i mean come on he's a VW guy so you know he has to be meticulous lol
