Non-xj question for gearheads

I know that when you rebuild a clutch-type LSD that you need to pre-soak the clutches before installation. They are very tight, and once the different is assembled, it can take a long time for fluid to saturate them. That causes a LOT of chattering. It could be that while they had the diff apart again, they took the opportunity to soak the clutches.

If it was a Factory LSD, there is no need to soak them. The plates are steel, not friction disc's.

wow.

I got to MIT for almost all of my axle related needs. they have a really good reputation and I have great service from them.

the owner, Dave, even gave me a bulkhead fitting for my ARB after I XXXXed mine up, didn't let me pay for it.

Same here, I was floored when he first mentioned it

I talk to Kenny all the time about idea's for my XJ, and they did a couple thousand dollars worth of work on my Wrangler. Top notch.

Definitely want to make it clear (not just to you, other san diegan's too) that they DID make it right in the end, and I was NOT in on these conversations...Two sides to every story and all that...;)

Also, found out that the gears that were used were "Sierra gears". I'm not familiar with those. Yukon, Genuine, Richmond, etc are what I've seen/heard.

Anyone have any input on the brand? Is is new or maybe just an OEM mopar replacement?

Sierra is just another value minded gear boxing company. Hit and miss and not premium.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

Oh and dont read in to that at all. They are a very typical boxed set, like Nitro, USA Standard, etc..

Not a bad gear, just another value set...

Yeah, no worries, i got your meaning. I've got nothing against value brands at all.

I go "value" on certain things like brake pads (I love pep boyz house chinese brand "pro-stop". Going on 3 years on the same set, no issues)

But I will not put anything but Moog and Spicer, when it comes to steering, and u-joints/bearings respectively.

Same with thermostats - Standt only, no house brands.

But then again, I love my "lifetime/cheapo" radiator from pep boys. It's going on 2.5 years, with nary an issue. And when the plastic sides finally pop, (whenever that is) I'll just take it in and grab a new one. :)

Lost a customer over those lifetime starters from AZ. They bought me the starter and I installed it, didn't work....now I figured I miss diagnosed and rechecked everything, bad starter. They brought me a second one, same scenario. Third one finally worked. I R&R'd three times, charged the guy for doing it only twice and now he hates me and thinks i am a scumbag for not doing it free the second AND third time.

It sucks to get sacked by a supplier. The customer doesn't want to hear excuses, they just want their junk to work for the price you quoted them. That is why I suspect many mechanics won't install any parts other than those they recommend.

Damn three bad straight out of the box? At least the crappy alternators in my S-10 would last a month or two before giving up.
I think on the third one it would be going through the window, discount tire style

My only issue with the "local" rebuilders is that the warranty is alot less if any, they charge more, they typically have a very crude working condition and the bench one local uses to rebuild alternators, has more crap on it then what is inside a 10yr alt, so contamination to bearings and elect components has got to be high, and then are typically VERY rude to deal with. I would have to say I have Never had a positive experience with a rebuilder as a whole.

I also have Never had a bad rebuild from vatozone straight out of the gate. And with my steering box, its great to return it after I know I have pushed the crap out of it and taxes the bearing and just want a new one, for free for life.

But then again I dont mind mechanical work, like some may. SO I could fully see the issue with the poss of getting a bad item and having to do it twice.

i had ok luck with vatozone alts over the years. we're talking probably 10 years ago though, havent replaced one since. the only time i ever killed them was when i was pushing a stereo system with lots of watts and using them on a continuous basis when i was younger. i think poor electrical connections seem to kill them faster. when i was back east, it seems like i went through a lot more alts. my guess is the corrosion from the salty roads had something to do with it.
