No bus

So I have a no bus, no start issue. I have searched the internet watched the videos and searched here in . Pulled the speedo cluster first, no dice. Then checked ohms on the CPS. They seemed good but I bought a genuine part anyway just to have a spare. Cleaned all the connections on the computer still nothing. Tried checking for the 5 volts on various places but I have no clue what I'm doing. Any advice would be appreciated it even some personal tech help. Vehicle is in a garage and I can hear it if necessary.

When soliciting help, you need to let us know your jeep's info: year, engine/trans, etc.

No Buss issues will be '97-'01 so we'll work around that.

In my experience, no buss issues are always tied to something faulty in the instrument cluster. Fortunately you can swap in a cluster from another XJ of the same year to trouble shoot it.

If pressing the cluster into the harnesses set in the dash doesn't fix it, I'd get another cluster to try. Cheap enough at the pull-n-pay yards.

Mine used to no bus and then go away with a whack of the cluster.

My apologies, it is a 2001 Cherokee Sport auto trans 4x4. I have removed the cluster twice now. (Dash is still apart) I've cleaned the connections and used dielectric grease but what you're saying is the cluster itself could be bad. Didn't think of that but maybe next weekend I'll make a to to pull &save

You checked for 5v ref but did you have it? No vref could be a shorted sensor or failed PCM. If no vref I usually cut the 5v wire close to the PCM and retest for 5v at the PCM. If it comes back there is a shorted sensor. If not a failed PCM is likely.

Tripped, the two I did check had 5v. I am not sure which ones to check but I'll do a more through investigation. And if necessary I'll check the pcm as you suggest.

Have you checked grounds? I personally had a main ground strap come loose at the firewall (the braided one that goes from firewall to rear to head).

How did the issue start, did you do any major work under the hood? Did you just go out one day to attempt to start it?

When mine had the same issue it was a bad engine block ground.

Blakews no major work done. Just drive it back from Wisconsin, 3 days later this issue. Luckily it didn't happen in the trip, if there is a bright side to this.

Yeah I'm gonna agree that a corroded ground may be an issue somewhere....

-SOLVED-
went back through everything, with 5v volts everywhere. took the ground off where the battery NEG goes to the body and wired wheeled it to metal for better connection. Did the same for the engine to firewall and BAM no bus is gone. Runs, drives and is now looking at other ways to piss me off. Only advise I can give future "no bussers" is just because its clean and tight don't take for granted that it is making connection. now I'll upgrade that strap. Thanks to all that gave advice!
