Just got my 2nd Jeep the other day (1st one was gone years ago) and was told about this site. Looks good so far and I hope to get info to keep my 89 going.

Good gawd, man...... old glove used as an insulator/standoff. Nylon strap as a battery hold down. And just how many clamps are on that exhaust?

Welcome aboard.

Welcome Aboard Fellow two door XJer,

Yeah you have endless info. and great mods. here at your finger tips...

Also alot of gurus thats been there done that...

Hope to see ya on the trail

Nick

PS. Thats got to be some record for the most clamps on a exhaust system.

There is a wealth of information around here on everything from basic maintenance to wild upgrades- and it looks like you're going to need most of it!

Welcome aboard.

I love the way the heater fan is held in place. Great use of duct tape. Have fun and take care of the battery hold down first as Rev said. I've seen too many vehicles go up in smoke because of an improper hold down or lack of one.

The old battery is long gone. I've had and seen acid and shredded plastic in the engine bay, not pretty. The strap is momentarily sitting in the back. The tab with the hole for the tie down is busted so I ran the new j-hook thru an existing hole in the wheel well.

The power steering cap, for the moment, is a plastic bag and hair bungies.

The 2 issues I have to deal with immediately: an occasional massive steering shimmy and the part time drive is on even though the lever is in 2x. The light goes on and I can feel the added drive running but then there's a metal on metal noise and shortly after that a loud bang and the light goes out and the drive is 2x.

The leaks on the ground are from my other toy, a 75 Honda GL1000. The Jeep hasn't left too much of a mark, yet...

I think the 2hi issue is going to be a stretched chain.

Read more info, especially about death wobble. Too bad most of the threads say use search or are linked to dead threads. :(

Replaced part of the drag link and either the torque or traction bar (can't remember which one) and replaced the front tires with 215s. The DW is worse: it occurs @ 55/60 regardless if the road is smooth or not. My guess is 1. alignment or 2. bent rim. Other parts aren't to the point of needing to be replaced immediately but after 200,000 miles they could be replaced.

The vacuum lines to the transfer case are disconnected for the moment. No issues now but I will look into it when I get the $.

Went back to the place that I got the tires from and told them what was going on. Gee, the right rim is bent...
What do they say, do something and 10 people will hear about it.

Anyway, got a pair of rims from a newer XJ and I was wondering if I'm going to have a problem with them fitting or rubbing.

next issue: taillight plugs

Yeah the wheels in the pic. should be fine...

Have ya done any exhaust work ? Man ,I've never seen so many clamps .LOL
You might gain ground clearance with a new exhaust.

Nick

 Thanks. Thats what I thought but a second opinion is always good. The taillights have a different wire plug so some cuttin n tapin is gonna happen.

Dealing with the DW has been the main focus for now. The order of repair is: Taillights, alternator, radio, exhaust, good cleaning, transfer case, rust issue. There are a few little annoyances that I need to take care of but when I get spare time. Sunday afternoon is the most time I have to [strikethrough]work[/strikethrough] play on the Jeep.
