I am looking at making some of my own bumbers like a few that are here. I am looking at getting a flux core welder (80 amp) as a small, general welder for doing light fab and fixit work. Any feedback from the group on getting something like this? ( keep in mind, I will be using this mainly on the xj and the budget is a consideration)

With all the stuff I've done welding bumpers jeep stuff and just all around metal work those little welders aren't worth much more than just tacking up stuff to be welded with a good 220 unit. If you buy the 80 to learn with then buy a new bigger unit and try and sell your old one your not going to get your money back out of it. The 110 units your pushing you luck on good heat penitration on anything thicker than 1/8 material.
I work at a ASME code shop so not everything has to be up to a code level weld at times but I've learned alot about heat penitration and a good solid weld vs. one that just looks good.
That and if you learn to weld with rod you can weld with a mig with no problems.

What is your favorite color? Red or Blue?
Also do yourself a favor and get a 220V- if you get a 110V there will come day where you would have wished you got the 220V.

A 80 amp welder is for sheetmetal....when the stuff gets tuff I fire up the Bobcat. And it comes in handy during Hurricane season too.

I broke down last fall and got a Hobart 180 (220V) W/bottle. right at 990 out the door with bottle, cart, 30 lb spool of .30 wire, chipping hammer, helmet, gloves... ready to go. Best tool I ever bought. for sheet metal less than 16 G, I can toss in a lighter wire and stitch to my hearts content. for an XJ. this is the best of both worlds. Enough power to weld all day on 3/16and 1/4 and the ability to drop down to smaller wire for light sheet metal.
Sure it cost a bit, but being able to glue two pieces of metal together.... Priceless.... :)
