One of the other reservists in my office has a problem with his 95 Chevy 1500. I drove it this morning and it made a grinding on take off from a stop sounding as if the gears weren't meshed. Like shifting the 231 from lo to hi while in gear. The noise wasn't there in 4wd lo or hi....just 2H. So I believe its tx case. he's from Phoenix and needs to have this fixed here in the SF bay area. Know any good shops? Preferably east bay.
Thanks,
Tom

That is very likely an NP231 under there, just like under our XJ's. HAs he tried shifting into and out of 4 wheel drive? Does it make different sounds in different modes? If so, the first thing to do is to take the shift linkage off and see if the mode lever is stuck between gears, this often happens as linkages get old and sloppy. Check for proper fluid level while you are under there.

Any competent tranny shop should be able to dig into it further if the problem persists.

I have a buddy who had a similar problem on his 97 Suburban. With some help from the GM techs at our dealership, it was diagnosed a a broken snap ring at the back of the t-case. It was repaired by just removing the tailshaft housing and replaceing the snap ring. I wasn't there when he fixed it, but he said it was real easy. I can talk to the guys tomorrow if you still need the help.

Thanks Andy, noise went away in 4H & 4L making me think linkage.
Bryan, I am not volunteering to work on this truck, no time as I'm outta town TH-MN....do you think that 4WPW could do this work or are they just installers? 4WPW shop is just across the freeway from the CG base or there is a Chevy dealer on Park St in Alameda.
Thanks,
Tom

I would hate to recommend 4WPW to anyone, as I have seen some of their work firsthand. :scared: :puke:

So I would recommend the dealer as they more than likely know what the problem is. If not, they should be able to tear it down and inspect it correctly. They are going to be more expensive, but usually you get what you pay for.
