My Ultimate HP 60 Build

Well, I meant one that we would use. :D

Search around, I don't think you'll find talk of D60 Detroits breaking. You also shouldn't be able to break a D60 Spicer axle and u-joint on 35's

Damnit, after some searching on pirate i found this to also be true for the bigger detroits too, not just d30 stuff. chances are if you pop an inner shaft, itll do something to the locker.

It struck me that this thread is called ulimate 60 build......for running 35's and 37's. Ultimate D60's are 300M shafts and CTM's, full case locker, and good aftermarket knuckles with good high steer arms........anything but built on a budget.

35-37's for now. ive been looking at some yukon shafts (yea yea i know) and some superiors with 806's. even with the things ive read, i might/probably will get a detroit cause i want full-case locker strength. as for aftermarket knuckles, im gunna overhaul the hell outta my stock ones and try to make them stronger and armless then the upgrade stuff out there. im one the fence if i wanna get ballistic high steer arms or make my own springless arms outta some 1.25" stock (4140 or something else stronger then just mild steel). ill probably make my own now that i have a bridgeport for myself in my shop, itll be a good project. hopefully, this axle will be pretty budget considering what itll have and what comparable ones would sell for.

my plan for the knuckles. i like a bunch of the stuff action fab has done in this build, ill be using alot of it for ideas and stuff for my build.

Ross, Rich just said your HP60 is gonna suck.

i forgot to mention that for the knuckles, im gunna be adding a 5th bolt and/or a keyway/dowel/keyed arms. id use some of the 1.25" plate from the arms to give me some more material on the modded knuckles for these extra additions. im still up in the air if i want TRE's or heims. if i do heims, i want to double sheer everything. I REALLY REALLY like the new Evo Machine 1 Ton TRE's too....:D

im at least gunna do some 35 spline stubs the first time around. so if im gunna have to buy some 35spl warn hubs, i might as well just get some flanges and not worry about them. itll see street time, so no spool for me please.

It has to do with even though the shafts arent really spinning, when the knuckle turns the shafts will wanna rotate so that it finds the best spot for it to pivet. ie-the inner shaft ears are inline with the kingpins up and down. problem with a spool is that the shafts cant rotate seperately to compensate for this. ive heard installed the shafts with the u-joints in phase with each other helps this.

Somebody corect me if im wrong, i think thats about the jist of it.

thats why i would think the spool would be better because the u joints will always be in line

What does that have to do with... anything if you're running lockouts?!?

i dunno :dunno: but im pretty much dead set on flanges, so it kinda eliminates the spool option with the amount of street this thing will see for me.

the dirtymax is only for the big trips to like rausch or moab. i gotta drive on the streets and show off to all the girls, chicks dig big tires:D

Why does someone out there always say "spool it".

I've spooled mine in the front, both to race and not worry about the air locker malfunctioning and because now the locker has broken so I welded it locked. I hate it spooled, and this is a buggy that doesn't drive on the street. As soon as I save up the dough I'm putting a Detroit in there.

I also have an issue with the phase of the axle joints when the front is locked. I think it might be because of my steering design, which I need to determine, but I'm going to put the axle joints in phase and see what that does. I have a wobble when turning when the front is locked, like it is permanently now. Plus, just moving around I hate the front end spooled, I'm spoiled after being able to unlock it and run it open. On the trail it doesn't matter, I leave it spooled all the time, but everywhere else it's a PIA.

Does the guy who recommends spooling the front have a spool in the front of his??

Spool it! ..!..:D..!.. Phasing the joints will not help you Richard.:moon:

Oh, and D60 Detroits don't break when an axle breaks like they can in smaller axles.

Twisted a Yukon 35-spline stub & stripped a drive flange, with the above being the result.
