My Ultimate HP 60 Build

Ross, what are your plans for gears/locker/shafts/3 link joints?
You aren't still planning on 35s are you? Not that there is a problem with 35s on some other front axle, just with that super heavy D60 you're building up front it will be.

5.38's and either a lockrite or one of the other new lunchbox lockers. If i find a good deal on say an arb or a t-locker, id get it i guess. not a fan of a detroit since a broken shaft=broken locker. as for shafts, to keep this thing budget friendly to begin with, ill be sending out two stock long side inners to dutchman to have them cut & resplined for $90. i figure ill be fine on them for now and itll keep the build cost low. later down the road ill upgrade to chromos and flanges. again, this is all unless i find a good deal i cant pass up to begin with. ill use either 2.5" or 3" ballistic joints all around with tube inserts and like 3/8ths wall tubing. the plan is 35-37's, i was actually looking at some new 37x13.5x15 baja claws to get an idea of price today. depending on how long my 35" claws last now, ill either be running them, another set of 35" claws or 37" claws. im not one bit worried about running 35's. ill be shaved enough, clearance wont matter and i wont have to worry about breaking anything.

ross wait till tax time im sure you will beable to pick up a nice set of 35's ar 35's for a 17" wheel

15" steelies for me please!! im gunna run some blackbird custom brackets and run smaller brakes to clear. that way i can run the tires i have on the 15" rims i have now

i didnt know you already got 8 luggers

decided to try out the new TIG welder I had at my dissposal
Wait, what? I knew it was a terrible decision to let you borrow that, I'm never going to see it again.

Looks good Ross. The wood truss looks great up close, I tried to convince him he didn't need a metal one after he made that one.

I was gunna run some JB weld thru a hot glue gun and jsut run it. it shoulda given me the best results and the best way to bold dis-similar materials IMHO :gee:

Damn, that's a helluva truss. Are you worried about bending those 1/2" thick DOM tubes? :)

Build a decent assist setup and you'll have no need to go to full hydro down the road. For pure performance, full hydro can't beat a good assist setup.

Oh, and D60 Detroits don't break when an axle breaks like they can in smaller axles. Besides, you'd be an animal to break a D60 shaft with 35-37" tires.

You must not know Ross (foxwar71)

Overkill is king:D I've studied almost every post you have pertaining to the steering system. I'll probably do something similar to your setup. Rework & rebuilt stock box, a good ram, upgraded pump, and a cooler. I'd like to run something like a detroit so I can also have the benefits of a full case locker over a stock carrier, but with all the horror stories I heard of shafts taking them out I wasnt to sure if I wanted to worry about it. But you say its not a problem in the bigger axles? The only thing that wont be pimped out to begin with are the shafts (keep built cost low & they should be OK with 35's). Down the road, I'll swap in some chromos. I know that the first, and hopefully the only, pieces to break are gunna be the stock shafts.

I have two goals for this axle:

1. build it as strong as possible the first time around
2. give it as much hell as possible with 35's and see what breaks

Search around, I don't think you'll find talk of D60 Detroits breaking. You also shouldn't be able to break a D60 Spicer axle and u-joint on 35's. Might break a 30 spline stub, but even that will be very hard to do on 35's and I'll bet you don't break it. Hell, we consider a D44 with chromo shafts and CTM's to be unbreakable on 35's.

Oh, yeah, thanks for the fix. :D

It struck me that this thread is called ulimate 60 build......for running 35's and 37's. Ultimate D60's are 300M shafts and CTM's, full case locker, and good aftermarket knuckles with good high steer arms........anything but built on a budget.

It's called "My Ultimate HP 60 Build". His idea of ultimate is different than yours(mine).

ouch...

Why learn how to drive when you can just build a bigger axle? :D

I'll happiliy trade some driving lessons for your new front axle.
That thing is going to be nice! :greensmok

Ross, Rich just said your HP60 is gonna suck.

:D

Thankfully, no front D60 sucks (well, after you dump the 30 spline stubs). Pretty amazing sometimes how much abuse they can take.
