My new rear axle.

Does a D44 housing have a 1/4in clearance all the way around? If it does, I think the D50 gearset will fit with out the need to clearance. I've only worked on one D50 and that was in a 99 superduty, never thought about stuffing those gears in a 44.

I would think that the whole carrier would need to fit for the ring gear to bolt up, and I would also think that the carrier for a D50 would be wider than for a D44. Machining the carrier may not leave enough room for bearings...

I have no proof of this... just making assumptions.

How about taking some quality pictures of casting numbers on the differential, we'll then be able to stop this guess work and get you some real information.

I was under the impression that were the high speed D44 carrier comes into play. Not using the D50 carrier.


I can get the casting numbers.
 
If the ring gear is larger, wouldn't that mean the nominal checking distance (for pinion depth) would get larger as well?

And if that's the case, wouldn't it require the inner pinion bearing to be spaced further back from the axle centerline?
