My First XJ Build

i don't get it, super beefy arms from them and only two bolts for their x member? And that looks like a 3 link x member so how are you gonna do 4? radius arms? in which case would be super sketchy with only 2 or even 3 bolts. I would add more material to make a 4-5 bolt x member.

Mike, Zac currently has a set of re radius arms that he got from chris. So he is going to run those for meow, until he can afford to go to 3-link. The directions from Clayton say to weld the mounts as well. The middle is removable by bolts.

jeremy is correct. i am using RE arms with the clayton 3 link mount. i will turn it into 3 link when i have the funds. also ill be welding the mounts to the frame as well as using the 2 bolts

Got some work done last weekend. Got 97+ mirrors and my 8.25 that I bough from chris all cleaned up and put it.

Been having tranny problems for the last couple months. Sometimes it takes more rpms than usual to get going from a dead stop, every morning when I leave for work it will stay stuck in first all the way to the end of my street (about 100 yards). At the first sign of this I took it into work and replaced the filter and fluid. It was good for maybe a week then started acting up again so I did a full flush. Added cheap fluid, ran it, drained it and repeat then added good fluid with some Lucas. This time it was only good for a couple days till it started acting up again. So I decided its time for a new tranny. Thanks to jeremy (Johnnie Walker) I'm picking up an AW4 attached to a NP231 for $200. The guy said he bought it to put in his moms jeep to convert it to 4wd but never got around to it. He said the guy he bought it from said it ran fine and has about 120000 miles. So I getting that today hopefully dropping it off at a friends grandpas house that has worked on trannys for 40+ years and he is gunna take it apart and see if its in good working order before I put it on. I would also like to put an sye in the 231 so I can just swap it all in at once. Gunna put an tranny cooler and temp gauge as well. I also figured this is the perfect time to replace the RMS. On top of all this I need to get my long arms, locker, new shocks, and a bunch of other stuff done before sierra fest in about 3 months.....aaaaaaaand I start a new job on Monday. Looks like I'll be pretty busy for a good while.

saw your post about tranny issues on Dr. My phone won't let me post over there so I'll post here... I had the same issues with my 96, turned out to be the 1-2 solenoid.

Oh okay. I'm getting a killer deal on this tranny and transfer case so I might as well replace it all. Gives me an excuse to finally do my RMS as well

sounds like solenoids. you can test them all at the TCu. its pretty easy with a multimeter.

Can explain it a little more. Not very transmission savy

i forgot how to test them, been a few years since i've dealt with an aw4 issue. But each solenoid is only held on with one bolt, you can get to it after you drop the pan. Super easy fix dude and way easier than dropping the whole tranny. tcase's are a hell of a lot easier than a tranny. Getting in that tranny tunnel to the top bolts with a torx socket sux big ballsac.

Well I held off on buying the transmission for now with this new information. I'll have to do some research on how exactly to text them and what not

well i pretty much shattered the solenoid theory.

after i called the guy to let him know i wouldnt be needing the tranny, i drove to AG (about 20 mins from my parents house) for dinner with my dad and sister.
after eating i drove back and on the way i stopped at a little sand lot to check if the rear end i put in was in fact limited slip. i drove up a small dirt hill in 2wd to spin the rear tires (it is by the way).
i backed up to leave and it just revved without moving, so i put it in 4 low and got out with little trouble, went back into neutral to shift out of 4 low, put it back in gear, step on the gas, and no movement. i rev it to about 4 grand and it finally it crawls away. once i get going all is well until i get to the stop light and it all starts over again.
i finally get to my parents house and park it in the driveway and the transmission fluid is literally BOILING. awesome.
i popped the hood and there is a puddle of trans fluid on the intake manifold. turns out it was coming out of the kick down cable...dafuq??? here is a pic of where it was, i had already wiped it up before i thought to take a picture.

you can see where its dirty, thats where fluid was puddling up.

so i gave chris a call to get some advice. we came to the conclusion that the transmission is toast. so i called the guy with the transmission and transfer case and luckily he was still in town so i told him i wanted to pick it up.

before i left i thought i would pull the radiator cap and see how it looks. pulled it and this is what i see.

first thing i thought was cracked head gasket. bummer.
so i checked the engine oil on the dipstick and its brand new (i just changed the oil). wiped it and checked again. still good. then i took the cap off to look for condensation or sludge or other signs and its good to. so it seems like the head gasket is fine. whew. what a relief.
so i sent that picture to chris and he says its a failed tranny cooler. makes sense.

sooooooo now what i'm going to do is drain all the fluid (trans and coolant), replace the radiator, and put an aux trans cooler and clean out the trans cooler lines and hope that will get me going on a short term basis.
long term i would like to replace the transmission (which i did end up picking up) and torque converter and install a trans temp gauge.

Never seen strawberry milkshake before.. Is that what the trans fluid looks like too? Or just the trans fluid pouring into the rad?

Here is what trans fluid looked like
hyrubavy.jpg

More like chocolate milk here

so yesterday i drained all the fluid out of the transmission, ran it, then drained it again. (did this a few times) then i flushed out the cooling system. started with pulling the drain plug. here is how it came out

after getting the water to come out mostly clear i swapped int he new radiator, filled up with water, as well as filled the transmission up and took it for a drive.

i drove down the street and everything sounded and felt great, so i decided to drive it a bit farther. took it on the freeway and did a small loop twice and everything was good.

at this point i'm relieved cuz now i can at least drive my jeep to and from work and not have to worry about rushing to get the transmission in. so i go back to my parents house, clean up tools and stuff and drive back home (about 15 mins) i get onto the freeway and i'm cruising at about 65-68, not over 70. all feels well until i notice it doesnt want to shift into overdrive. so i shift down into 3rd, then back into drive to see if that does the trick. still nothing. so i keep driving and keep my eye on the rpm's. usually when cruising in 3rd i'm at about 2200-2300 rpms, which is what it was at. then right as i look at the tach i notice my rpms getting higher and speed getting lower. so again i shift into third and back into drive and still nothing changes. once the rpms get up to about 4500 i pulled over and shut it off. i popped the hood and checked the trans fluid level and its perfect. good. i go underneath, and no boiling fluid sound. also good.

then i called my dad to see what he thinks, he said try to take the frontage road back to his house and park the jeep there until we can figure out what to do next. he said until then i can drive my moms car. clifford the gas guzzling v10 excursion. yayy......

so i shut the hood, started her up, put it in gear and it pulled away and shifted just fine. i drove all the way back to my parents house (which was closer than driving the rest of the way to mine) with absolutely zero problems.

so at this point i'm stumped. do i take it to a transmission shop and pay to have it power flushed out so i'm sure all the water and shit is out. or do i stop dumping money into this transmission and proceed with putting the new one in. in which case the jeep will have to sit until i can afford a new torque converter and have the time to do the swap.

anyyyy help/advice/"hey, here is what happened, and here's how to fix it" would be awesome.
