MOAB ... damage

precursory overview of the jeep shows only slight carnage from moab...

most notably my broken shock:

somehow the stud backed its way out of the lower mount and during my JeepSpeed run :D after pritchett i think the lower part of the shock worked its way off completely and then likely got caught between the axletube and either something on the ground, or, was compressed down against the tube over one of the whoop-de-doops.

...either way it sheared the shaft.

led/joey/jeff: looks like i'll be down in CS on monday to p/u a bike-- any chance any of youse would be available to take a look at that mount to see the best fix (i.e. weld i presume)?

other than that, the armor definitely took a beating-- my passenger rock rail got "adjusted" such that i couldn't open the door until we massaged it back into place w/ a pry bar. and i notice my gas tank skid definitely has some beauty marks that weren't there before. ;)

all and all not bad at all considering the abuse this time out (street tires and all).

more pix later.

so how'd everyone else fare?

If you're not busting or bruising your XJ, then you're not wheeling hard enough.

Speaking of which, my girlfriend asked why people who own Jeeps always seem to be working on them. I simply said it's because we take them off-road and push them past their limits.

meh, i personally don't subscribe to that theory, though i know plenty of folks who do.

so i pulled the other rear shock to check the mount (it was loose too):

i'll have to ask bob (T&T) what mounts he used when he cut/raised them for me (JKS maybe?), but they seem to have a design flaw... the force on the stud just eventually wallows the hole in the mount and strips the threads on the stud. :thumbdn:

thanks for the PM led... just tell me what kind of redneck beer you prefer these days. ;)

Must be the Edelbrocks. I had them on the jeep before I ever started lifting it. Handled great. When I got back from Moab in 2000, either I heard a noise or I was just working on the jeep, and I noticed that the shaft on one of my rear shocks was broken. Shows how unimportant rear shocks are, I had the jeep full with family and junk piled on top, and never noticed any difference in handling.

yeah i was surprised how i really couldn't tell that one was missing both the last day on the trail and on the ride back home to CO...

but those edelbrocks are too firm for me anyway. i miss the buttery old man emus, but they don't make one in the best length for me now that i've chopped the mounts. led recommended the rancho 9000s... haven't priced 'em yet, but i may have to just $ettle on some procomps for the rear.
