Since I blew my motor and the crank is toasted, I'm looking for an alternative. I've got a 150 mercury outboard, (actually I've got two one is on the boat hehe) and I'm thinking of putting that in the truck! I don't know if any of you knows those motor, but they're quite strong, and quick. They can turn 5500rpm for hours, everything is on bearings, real needle bearings, and ball bearings for top and lower crank.

I've already got the plan in my head, I will fabricate a 90 degree spacer for the carbs (they would not work on their side and placing the motor in the engine bay will do that!), then motor mounts should not be a problem, electric water pump and a tank to have a good water(coolant) flow (I thought about putting a big 200gallon tank in the back of the truck but you know I'd have to keep filling in up). So much for the motor, now the toughest part will be the tranny. I want to keep my AW5, to keep it standard, I love shifting! I was thinking of bringin the outboard flywheel and the original 2.8 flywheel to a clutch/machine shop and ask them what they could do. I have to keep the original rain gear (from the outboard) for the starter, and the flywheel surface of the 2.8 for the clutch. Unless the clutch shop could fabricate a custom clutch and coupler to fit on my outboard flywheel.. mmmm yes that's a good idea.

Jsut for the sake of "just because i can?" Sounds like something i would do. I dont know about the cooling factor of water that is either being recirculated through a tank or even re-using the radiator. Water that is pumped in from a lake or other body of water is WAY cooler than what you would get from a radiator. It'd have to be a large enough tank that the water can cool to almost ambient temp before it was pumped back in the the motor. That may use your' whole bed or a good portion of it.
Overheating is the only real problem i see other than matching the output shaft up to the tranny. Most of that can be machined as well as fabbed motor mounts.
I like original out of the box designs, good luck with it!

You should install a VW bug air cooled engine. Then you wouldn't need to carry extra water in a tank for the cooling. You will just need to rotate the starter 180* so the engine will run with the correct rotation. This is because the VW is rear engine and the XJ is front engine, and the cylinder firing order needs to be reversed so the transmission will run in the correct directions.

For the VW engine, it's just I don't have one. As for me outboard motors is really easy to get cheap since I work in the domain.

As for low end torque, I'm not worried, I'm not sure about the gear ratio but it's straight turning a high pitch prop in the water, without a slipping clutch. As for burning clutches, there is only one way to know! I'm willing to give it a shot :). I'm going to take the stuff appart and bring the stuff to a clutch shop see what they can do for me. Then I will go from there.

As for the cooling, yes the lake is indeed cold... We'll see. I'll have to set up a temp gauge if I don't want the pistons to melt xD.

Put down the pipe? sry I don't get it lol.

And btw, it's not that I want a 2 stroke or whatever, it's just that I've been thinking of doing that for about 5 years now, and well now that I have the capacity to do that work myself and the vehicule to put the motor in.. It's time I do it. I will post pictures :)

he's joking about you smoking crack. something to do with putting a boat motor in a jeep? sounds about right, maybe more of a pookie thing though.

im pretty sure 3/4 of the people who've posted, regardless of what they say, DESPERATELY WANT YOU TO DO THIS.

do it, it should be interesting.

I can appreciate wanting to build something just to see if you can do it. I built a hybrid front axle with a Samurai center section and Dana 30 outers with a truss across the front and bottom of it. I built it becuase it was cheap and I can beat the crap out of it and I wanted 5.13's but everyone that looks at it says I wasted 40 hours of my life. Whatever at least I now know it can be done.

So my advice is that if you're only investing time you would have otherwise spent sitting on the couch or wherever and not really spending much money, I say go for it.

I certainly want to go for it! There is definitely some money involved, or well most probably.

That's as far as it will go right now! I closed the hood on it =D

Now the tranny is I think a few inched dropped I will have to look into it, as right now the engine is right at the bottom (on top of the diff and steering) and the tranny is a little too low. I want to place it that way so because it will make it easy for water inlet/outlet and exhaust wich are at this end. If I cannot have some clutch/flywheel/coupler fabricated I will consider turning the engine around, using my original flywheel, and fabricating a custom exhaust port cover (the big cover where the wires go over in the last picture is that exhaust port).

I'm sorry to say there will probably not be any updates before next wednesday, my only day off when I can go at the machine shop!

this would be a sick swap. boat motors are built really tough. as far as the water issue goes im not sure but i dont think you would have a problem running a regular radiator. i put my 650 jet ski motor in a friends odyssey using the radiator from the odysey and it didnt have any issues with cooling. im know the boat motor is a little bit different than a ski motor but they both are water pumpers. i would really like to see you pull this off. being a 2 stroke i dont think you would have any problems with torque.
