Midwest Fishing!

yaaaaaa, deffinantly not an ugly stick fan. they work for carolina rigging or any other sort of bottom fishing (used them a lot in salt water) but cant cast for poo. the heavier actions are just... heavier, heavier rods in general. still way too soft in the tip. im not saying i catch more fish because if pricey gear, it just makes it easier to stay on the water longer.

on the topic of children... i have been using my fathers gear since i can remember. the key i feel (and i have had to do this with my moron cousins) is to get them to SLOW DOWN. noise and commotion dont just scare fish, its how accidents happen. leading by example worked for me when i was young, but i cant speak for other children. also making them respect the gear and take care of it. i cant tell you how many times i scrubbed my fathers boat at 5am before school because i wanted to go fishing the night before. he payed for gas and its all his gear... guess its the least i can do.

there is a quote (that im sure i wont recite word for word) on some of the outdoor networks on TV, goes something like, "take a kid fishing, and youll never have to wonder where they are."

i like it.

I hear yah on the kids being respectful and slowing down. She is pretty good. In fact she cleaned my boat out for me including using my shop vac on it. I'm also rough on stuff myself. I find it easier to spend $30 on another rod instead of $250. Is the action perfect on a Ugly Stick, hell no. Do I miss strikes every now and then, yes. I just have too many hobbies and money is thin to begin with so I can't justify spending it on a high dollar piece.

Maybe I'm just cheap. lol I open my wallet and moths fly out.

Heck my boat motor is a 1974 25hp Evinrude on a 1986 14ft Smokercraft Big Fisherman. I paid $800 for the boat, motor, trailer, and brand new deep cycle battery. It's loud as the exhaust is above water, and it smokes some but I love it due to it's simplicity and reliability of one pull starts. I know it will need a clutch dog in the near future but buying a new Honda motor @ $3000 is out of the question.

nothing wrong with not wanting to spend the dough.

that maybe the difference between being more passionate about fishing, versus it is simply a hobby?

as long as your having fun. or more importantly... the kids are!

i wil say though, our bass stuff is pushing 10 years old. and most of our salt water gear is as old as i am or older! if you can take care of it, gear pays for itself.

True, but hook up on a 10 to 13 lb largemouth and see what it feels like, I'm there to rip some lips, not Lolly gag around, the faster you get it in the boat the faster you can catch another

lost a good sized pike yesterday... i think i found my favorite "game fish" in michigan. reminds me of catching barracuda. i need to try musky. going again this morning.

the lake ive been going to lately is pretty remote, small, and unpopular. it is also CRYSTAL clear. i recently aquired a gopro.... i think im going to grab my goggles and fins and dive the lake. see if i can find the deep holes, and get some sweet fish footy.

I used to be into fishing big time. Over the past 10 years or so I have gone less and less every year. Shoot, I have only gone twice in the past 1.5 years. I just sold our boat a few weeks ago as I don't fish that much anymore and didn't want to fix the damn motor. :)
Jeeps take up most of my time and for some reason, I don't mind not fishing, I would rather go wheeling these days. Maybe come winter I will get back into some ice fishing. I just have no desire to go and buy all new summer fishing equipment as I have barely any. If it wasn't so flippin humid and hot out I would of asked the old man to see if he wanted to go fishing for fathers day.

i saw my fawking pike! unless someone else donated a chartruse spinner bait to a 30" pike... i saw him cruising in the shallows! followed him for about 3 minutes before i lost him.

fished the edge of open water, around a 20ft hole in the small lake. picked up over a half dozen pike. a couple good sized bass. missed more pike right at the boat. most were little hammer handles, one i saw at the boat was pushing 20".

i like fishing for these things... lol.

sun started going down, and i pulled out the bobber. caught some good sized blue gill, but not enough for a meal. let them all go.

I put together a little tackle box that fits under the back seat of the Jeep. I'm planning on using the S-hooks from rubber bungee cords to hook a fishing rod into the side of the headliner. I figure there are times I have some time to kill and could try and see if they're biting.

Edit: I've also seen a product I've been having difficulty saying no to. Zebco makes little rod/reel combos called Dock Demon, both open faced spinners and closed face reels. I think they're 30" length. I figure they could be a great little rod to keep with me when I go kayaking since my kayak isn't built for fishing. Though a fishing kayak is on my list of things I want.

Picked up my open face rod and reel from being at a friends parents cabin for a couple years. I bought it and used it once and left it up there. I am now in the mood to get some stuff and go again. Probably will go on private lakes until I decide if I want to get a license. Last time I got one, it was the time I got the pole.

This is the pole I got, I know it is a cheap one, but I like it.

Josh, ever looked at telescoping rods to stuff under a seat or whatever? I picked one up years ago, thinking it would be good for bike/backpack use. They pack up small, but aren't good for much more than ultralight tackle and pan fish, but good enough when you're just looking to kill some time fishin', or entertaining kids.

This fish is actually huge, it's just that I'm tall and fat, so it looks small...

I bought (at sports authority at the time, now available at, you guessed it, wal mart.) an Abu Garcia product, called the cardnial series, and I matched it with the Conolon series rod. this is a STEAL for the price. I have sincce bought 4. I think the reel was like 29 bucks, and the rod was about the same. JOSH, buy a rod that breaks down in half, (like the one listed above) and store that in your jeep, thats what I do when I take ole Green fishin.
