max safe towing weight?

the trip went fine. cruised at 55 in 3rd gear, got 13mpg the way down 8mpg on the way back. nothing overheated, everything seemed just fine.

The person i bought my xj from used to tow his auto cross car with it from Seattle to Utah, so you should be fine along as you do like everyone else has suggested.
