Manual/Automatic AWshifter

Woody, it may not be the best idea, but if I remember, I'll find out and let you know. I bet it holds 1st. 4.88s and super-worn 32s, I don't think 4000RPM in 1st will have me going really fast.

And what does the dual switch setup do? Full control of shifting between 1st and 2nd, and TC control? Lame. Give me 1st-2nd-3rd-4th and TC control over that, any day.

On mine, there are 3 switches, one for 1<->2 when the shifter is in 1-2 (or 3<->4 when the shifter is in 3 or OD) and another to lock<->unlock the TC. The third switch cuts off the TCU completely, and "I think" this mode would hold whatever gear it's in at the time the signal is cut off. After the install, I broke the TC switch, so I relocated and upgraded it and the 1-2 switches to heavier duty push-pulls on the console slope... aside the brake lever.

In real-world use, I only locked the TC when in 1st/low range on a steep descent and in 3rd/4th on longer streches of road. I installed my setup BECAUSE my TC quit locking, and the dealer wanted too much for a new brake pedal switch. Getting mostly manual control was a bonus.

Phil, don't zing your motor into float on account of me. :viking: unless you need another one anyway.

i love the idea, and the guy who invented it(heh... not literally) but... is there a way to include a different switch? something less-gay-hardcore? are there any options? i really dont like the 1930s AM radio knob look...

Yeah, I built a setup using an on-off-on toggle switch mounted on the front side of the shifter, and a converter lock up on the center console, I cant load pics form my hard drive and dont have any web pics, so sorry, but the schematics can be found at www.steve88xj.com works very nice. You can wire it all yourself with like $15 dollars worth of switches, wire, and mounting "block" Ill try and get pics soon, or hell send me an email ill get you the pics directly.

ok i dont mean to hijack this thread but i havea quick question. Im going to rig up my own switches for 2cd gear lock and a torque converter lock, but my questions is when do u know when to hit the shifter to lock in 2cd, while its in 2cd? or can it be done anytime. My second question is when do u flip the switch for the torque converter, while ur in motion or stopped? it seems to me this is an engine brake.

Once again sry for the thread hijack i just thought it would be more apropriate to ask in this thread then make a new thread on this topic

thanks guys

Just a note for those of you that didn't like the supplied switch.

Page 6 of this catalog offers a few designs for a 5 position rotary switch, even illuminated ones: http://www.idec.com/Products/ENG/PDF/U907_PDFs/A_Switches/A_Switches_SelectionGuide.pdf

Hi-price knobs: http://www.kilointernational.com/knobs/knobs.html

you can also get a mounting plate with the numbers on it to clean up the installation some (bottom of page): http://rocky.digikey.com/WebLib/ElectroSwitch/Web Data/Knobs&Dial Plates.pdf

Another idea is to head to the salvage yard and find a slide style switch from the fan speed selector (in the heat/ac unit) from an older model vehicle. You could even rig this up like a miniature shifter next to the real shifter.

Is there any way to make this work with a lever?
MY 2wd Dodge Dakota has an AW4 that i want to convert to a manual shift but it is a column shift with no cent console unit to mount a shift switch to. Something liek what a standard RMV tranny has.
THANX

OR any new developement on the paddle shift thing

That would be pretty freakin sick

The TCU looks for the shift lever position to determine base transmission settings, in addition to the shifter manually controlling the internal spool valve. Park, Reverse, Neutral are all mechanically based settings. However, there's nothing to prevent you from running an extra shift lever with some soldered in contacts to control the gears, assuming you have the basic shift cable control still in place.

So then in theory i could rig up some sort of shifter to shift through gears and keep the column shifter for the mechanical stuff.

I dont mean to jack the thread but anyone have any ideas on hwo to do this?
Im only 16 so i have minimal knowledge of how to go about this.

Not sure what exactly you are asking? It would work the same way as those of us with console shifters, you can mount the electronic control anywhere you want. You would just put your column shifter in Drive, and then use the electronic controller.

What i am asking is: Is there anyone out there who has or knows how to do this manual shift system but instead of a dial to shift, I would like some sort of joystick/lever like a normal shifter

send me an email at [email protected]
I'm still looking into other ideas, one of which is up/down paddle type shifting (though that's probably a ways off), another involves a joystick type shifter (probably available much sooner).

Dual switch setup gives you control of all 4 gears and the TC control.

is it really that bad guys? :) those I just get from RadioShack, nothing special, do I need to start getting different ones and provide a choice? Some radioshack options:

t274-402.jpg
t274-403.jpg

offer them as upgrades and make a quick disco so that you can swap "FAST" from one to the other...

might get with a sticker company and get your sticker made with the AWShifting logo and put them on the knob - that would be cool...

now make one of these for the Torque converter in my ax-15

Still wondering if this setup will hold first gear through redline, or will it upshift to second at +-4000 RPM/65 MPH?

i know the turbo 400 does that.... it will shift out of first, and when it does BOOM you feel it...

BrettM find yourself a Allen Bradly industrial control book.
They sell a nice 5 pos. Joystick it's modular so you add the switch blocks you need.
The nice thing is it locks by pushing the stick down, could be used pos1 (full auto mode), Pos2.-4th Pos3-.3rd, Pos4.-2nd, Pos5.-1st.
What I like is with stick in Pos.1 (Automatic mode)and pushed down it can't get bumped into 1st gear.

Quick questions just so I understand.
1. You put the regular sifter into Drive and then use this to shift gears correct?
2. I can see the advantages of being able to leave it in 1 for hill descent control and 3 for towing or better gas mileage (stock gearing larger tires) but what would 2 and 4? be used for?

Thanks Guys
Garth

1. Yes, if you put the floor shifter into Drive, you will have use of all 4 gears with the manual shifter. If you place the floor shifter in "3" you will have use of the first 3 gears, and if you place the shifter in "2-1" you will have the use of just the first 2 gears.

2. Whatever you want ;) Perhaps you are going up a grade and the tranny keeps switching between 3rd and 4th, and you'd prefer it to just stay in 4th. Or perhaps it can't decide between 2nd and 3rd, and you want it to stay in 2nd...
