LS1 Swap

didnt know you had to spell dead on correctly for someone to understand you. Sorry i have texting disease. I like spelling words most people know what um saying some of the older generation that dont text will say that. Why dont you want a manual? Are you going to make it a daily driver or rig trailer queen only?

What I would do for an LS build is start with a LQ4/9 truck motor (or if you can find a LS2 cheap enough; 400 hp from the factory), swap LS style intake (probably FAST's alum intake). The truck engines are better for building since they are cast iron vs the alum actually LS engine.

A LS2 would be sweet. Once i get my re enlistment bonus im going to start my search for a smashed up GTO. If can get a 05-06 that would be a dream come true. but i dont think the chrysler 8.25 will take 400hp daily. Even if it is behind a auto. I can already tell this is going to get expensive. But the end result will be XXXXing amazing.

If you're getting enough in your bonus to buy the smashed up GTO, buy yourself a D44 and some chromo shafts, or go all out and get a Pro Rock 60...:D

TK, there are strokers out there with very similar power to your L98 w/ ax15s and 8.25s and they are holding up fine.

If I am gonna go to the trouble of swapping in this motor, the least I am going to do is mate a manual to it that is no where near as sloppy as the 4500. Not to insult, but the 4500 requires a lot of work to fit. Plus side? Beefy as hell and probably will not break. But the downside is usually fitment into the XJ, and to get big strong gears into the case and have it be bullet proof they sacrificed some of the precision and thus made it a bit sloppy.

But then again When I do this it will be my DD street MJ, so a T-56 will do nicely. And since the current tranny is an ax-4... I will be buying something anyway.

I was thinking of going with the 44's out of the JK rubicon. That way i got a eletric locker and 4.10's. Ill see how long theyll last before they explode lol.

Unless you are trying to break them they should do fine. Even then, they will probably do fine. V8s do not make magical amounts of power that snap drivetrain components like twigs. Until the LSx platforms came out stoke brake HP on the average small block was around 200HP. This is not counting specialized race engines, I am talking about your run of the mill 305 or 350.

Thats what I was thinking! Its an XJ not a Drag car, Its not like they see hard launches all the time.

do these strokers see year round daily driven? 8.25 with upgraded shaft would prolly take the abuse but with lockers and 37's and a really heavy foot, low tire pressure and lots of traction could make shit the axles out. Depends what tires your rolling too. Ill look for this wrangler build up but its on youtube guy put an ls2 37s tires nv4500trans i think 513 gearing and only managed a 15.3 1/4mile time. 400hp and a light weight wrangler doesnt make sense. But he had the pro jock 60 and dana 44 front. I know its not a drag jeep but for that much money that mother should fly more then that atleast a low 14 i would guess.

expensive is an understatement

you cant expect a 400hp motor to be put in a vehicle that was built for 170hp crank power on stock drivetrain to endure that kind of abuse. If your gunna do you might as well go all the way. Unless it is a rig only and its alright to snap and break shit and have it sit for weeks upon end for you to fix it.

This is why chose the 5.3L:
The 5.7 (Gen1) makes 255hp and 330ft lb torque

You're referring to the Vortec 5.7 SBC. I was suggesting the 320hp/345lbft LS1 from a '98+ Camaro/Firebird, and it would be even better if you also got the 4L60E tranny that came behind it.

If you run 37s on an 8.25 behind a stock 4.0, you're asking for trouble. But if you have a 29 sp 8.25, it'd probably handle 33s and a mild V8 without much trouble.

EDIT: Wranglers aren't lightweight, they weigh more than comparable XJ.

My stroker was my daily driver for a while. When I got My MJ it switched to a backup role. However as I switch to working on the MJ for a while the XJ will be my DD again. 33" shoes and I am not exactly easy on it.

Well im stuck in New mexico doing Aerial Gunner training till Jan. I dont get my bonus till march. So i wont be able to start till then. But some time next year your going to see pics of a empty XJ engine bay with a LS hanging over it. But projects like these dont happen over night. THey take time and you said it your self they take money. Give people some time.

Something to keep in mind when you guys are looking for donors is that the 98-99 ls1's don't have the best oiling passages in them.

Also all 01-02 cars have ls6 intakes. Some 01-02's have ls6 blocks (no ls6 cam or heads).

And one more thing is that the 99-04(?) lsx engines had issues with the roller rockers coming apart.
