look - we arent attacking you - take our advice for what it is - We are people who you have never me, on the Intra-net, posting our own Opinion, fawking do what you will....

if you want to ignore all our advice and go for it anyway - fawking be my guest, if you want to take all our advice as gold and not run 37's on your ford 9" / hp d44 because someone say's it is too weak - be my guest...

personaly i dont care what you do - just make DAMN sure that when you break something, and it puts you out of comission on the trail, that i am not behind you... or that you know how to work on your own junk.

You're only advice so far in this thread has been "Jeeps are built not bought" -Good job. Very informative. Try posting something usefull then maybe he'ld actually have some reason to take you advice.

Buying a used vehicle is always a risk, but plenty of people do just fine on 35s, depending on the type of wheeling they do and how they drive. As for the 4.10s, I don't know what first gear is, but it sounds like it is ideal for cruising, but around town and off-road maybe a little to high. Maybe you now have more T-case options too for 4:1 kits, or maybe less.

First gear is actually around 2.46, but the torque converter, effectively doubles that at low speed.

EXCELLENT, just remember to adjust the bands once in awhile, and change the fluid about once a year, and this thing should last just about forever.
My family still has an old dodge truck (74) that has one from the factory and went almost 430,000 miles before it quit, and you know how farm trucks get beat., so we rebuilt on a saturdayafternoon, and drove to church on sunday in it. That was about 12 years ago, and it is still kicking.

Good lord, lol.

How can there be so much contrasting info on this tranny? Its crazy you hear bad, decent, ok, or really good. I am gonna listen to those that have the tranny and all they all say atleast good things, like yourself. Plus alot of folks especially TJ owners say its very normal to swap a TF999 in, its not as "perfect" as an AW4 since its 3 speed, but I learned its stronger and an easier swap, which makes this Jeep make sense now.

Sounds like a deal to me!

Personally I wouldn't wheel it hard until it had a full inspection and either an 8.8 or an XJ 44 put in the rear with a good once over on the turdy to make sure it's not hanging by a thread...

Actually the trans swap sounds cool!

Good post your exactly on the same level of thinking as me.

Guys got to remember the man is selling it for what a stocker with the same mileage goes for. How can you pass that up when your just dieing to wheel again? With the money I have saved I have just right now at this moment $3k to spend on "fixing" or "upgrading" stuff, but until it breaks I won't. I'll even stay 4.10s cause the 8.25 and d30 won't be there too too long. The tranny seems to be one of the last things that will need attention.

Yeah I'm not gonna wheel it hard until I have atleast an 8.8 sitting in the garage. Heck I forgot I can get an XJ D44 for $150.

Oh, if any body cares, you can can the gears in this tranny by changing planetaries, my favorite one is from a dodge 727 truck tranny. This one is down around a 2.67 low gear, but I have heard from some tranny mechs I know that there is supposedly a lower (2.82) gear in the motor homes, but I have not found one yet. Maybe one day...

There isn't. There are people that have it, had it, beat the crap out of it for 400K miles, and then there are those that just like to hear themselves talk.

I know who I'ld listen to.

i have no issues with the tranny - as i have no expierence with it...

all im saying is after my nightmare of a jeep (as sometimes they all become) i would never buy anytihng that anyone else built and wheeled - that way i know about ALL the isues (because i created them) and dont find out deep in the trail.

and personaly - 6,500 is WAY more than I *hope* to ever spend on a rig that i am going to thrash...

also - the 35's on stock axles turns me off - makes me wonder how well the rest of the rig was built...

just saying that i would walk - take that for what its worth....

thanks Bassalt for ripping me a new one...

He beat me too it.

But I will agree with our observation about the 35's, if you are serious about it drive it and take it to a trusted mechanic to check it out. Buying someone elses trail rig can be dicey at best

Ok thanks,

Guys its not the guys trail rig, its his DD and its been offroad 2 times from what the owner says. He said it only sees pavemnet and that is why he is buying a car.

I am paying $5300 for this Jeep, how in the world could it even be closlely considered a bad deal. Its a DD Jeep and will continue to be one. I also never said anything about thrashing it, I will wheel it, but I am not gonna beat on it. The Jeep doesn't have a single dent in it, much less been wheeled hard. If it looks rough in person I'll steer clear, but its only had the lift and 35s since Nov. '04.

I've driven a jeep with this tranny, it had over 250k on the odo. Never heard anything bad about it, except for the disadvantage every 3-sp has, no OD. with 4.10s and 35s, I think it would be about right for highway driving. Drive it. Of course you never know when buying a rig that's modified, you know it's been abused. Buy it if the guy who built it dosn't seem to be a dumbass.

Yeah, I know about buying built rigs I have to be very very careful and look for problems, even if there isn't any. I will take it to my mechanic also.

I was just not sure about the tranny itself that has been swapped in, but the more I learn the more I feel like its a good tranny.

I realize that this is a little off topic, but the TF family internals are pretty much all the same, unlike some other brands, AND the TF can be built to handle insane amounts of power easily, and cheaply (blown hemi's {426-600+ cid} come to mind). So basically, enjoy the jeep like you want you.

Here are pics of the Jeep. I called the guy and the tires need to be replaced asap, he said he will put some 33" MT/Rs on it for me that have 50% tread:

He said he swapped in the TF999 and it some how over heated then had it rebuilt and added all the stuff to it including a frame mounted cooler and it has been perfect. It also has header, new exhaust, yellow top Optima, etc. I think it should run good with 33s.

with just the body and lift alone, i would buy it and worry about the trany later even if i didnt think it was a good trany, talk about a killer starter platform!!! i wish i could have gotten that kind of deal!!!!!

Pics didn't work for me. (now they do)

No time to say much here but I will say that the T-flite is nothing to really worry about, but if it were me I'd rather the aw-4 but only for the overdrive. That being said I too recently bought a Jeep with a similar combo ('89 MJ 4.0/999) and it performs well. A blown tranny line on the highway resulted in the tranny emptying itself and gettin' pretty hot but after a refill it still works great (and I assure you I thoroughly hammered on it afterwards to make sure). I've had years of experience with the t-flites (in '69 Cuda, '80 Lebaron, '87 Dakota, '77 Monaco, '85 Ram) The 727 in the Ram was the only one to ever give any problems (exploded planetary) but that truck did a lot of towing and never had a cooler until after that failure.

Yeah, I was having trouble understanding why folks thought it was a bad deal. I don't think people realize a stocker in the same condition and miles will cost the exact same. I know cause I was looking...

Just found out it does have 4 to 1 in the np231 too.
