Loneliness of a good ol' boy-gearhead-environmentalist

When it comes down to it, we off-road because we like the outdoors. He's right, we (off-roaders) spend more time in the environment than the so-called environmentalist do.

I get into arguments with these so-called "Tree-Huggers" because they call me an "Eco-Terrorist." After I get them to listen, I explain that most of us help preserve the environment - for example, clean-up days, fund raisers, and, I also tell me that often times, guys will pick up someone else's trash when we are on the trail. And, I emphasize that most of us only off-road in designated OHV Trails.

I then ask them, "What are you doing to help the environment?" In which I usually get answer, "I vote," or "Nothing" or "I recycle"

If that doesn't get them to shut up or retract their attacks, then I invite them to come off-roading with me or to come to an event. That usually gets them speechless.

Wow.. I could go on..

The author of that article is definately right the Greenies that are always knocking us very rarely get out in the outdoors and see it for what it is. They dont look into what we as an off-road community do for the environment and that is why we are having problems with the ORV's like we are. Tellico is close to be closed and for no reason. That will certainly hurt the area with all the revenue lost.

Negative comments toward him prove "environmentalists" right. I am not saying anybody said anything negative just a forword.

Chad, they doo look into what we as a community do forthe environment, but they look at the people that go on unmarked trails and do foolish things, especially things frowned upon.

The group I went to Coal Creek with came back with Three XJ's almost full of trash, mostly other peoples trash. In multi-use parks such as coal creeek it is the only way to gauarantee they stay open.

As one who myself came to 4-wheeling through my interest in the outdoors and the natural world (rather than visa-versa), I have to say that it is just incorrect to say that those with environmentalist leanings rarely get outdoors. In fact, its just not true. Maybe your comment applies to a Sierra Club administrator sitting in an office tower, but as an all inclusive statement, no. That's really not much different than a so called "greenie" saying that jeepers are all trash dumping, tire squeeling yahoos. Stereotyping and labelling isn't going to keep any trails open.
